A-Plus Declares Intention To Contest Gomoa Central Seat As Independent Candidate

Kwame Obeng Asare, better known by his stage name A Plus, a political activist and social commentator has announced his desire to run as an independent candidate in the December 7, 2024, general elections for the Gomoa Central Constituency.

The outspoken activist and artist claims that he is deserving to be elected to represent his constituents in the next parliament since he has done enough for the Constituency.

As he is popularly known, Kwame A Plus, expressed optimism about his victory in the parliamentary elections and urged prospective candidates to refrain from running against him in 2024 to represent the Gomoa Central Constituency in Parliament.

“I am not contesting NDC or NPP. I will unseat the MP in this area. Anyone who competes with me, I will defeat the person. I am very confident that I am going to win this seat”.

A Plus Admonishes NPP And NDC Not To File Candidate In Gomoa Central Constituency

Mr. Kwame Obeng Asare mostly referred to as A Plus emphasized that it is very likely that in 2025  he will be the only independent candidate in Ghana’s Parliament.

He therefore called on the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party not to file a candidate to contest for the Gomoa Central Parliamentary seat in the 2024 General Elections as he believes it will be a total waste of resources on the part of the two major political parties and their parliamentary candidates.

“This constituency is ours, if you want to contest we are waiting for you. If you come with money, sweet talks, or anything that the person brings, I will beat him/her. I have more influence than anyone. So whether NPP or NDC, no one should contest the seat coming 2025, they should allow me to go unopposed and go to parliament.”

“I don’t even want any competition. Anyone who wants to join me can share my ambition with me and maybe if I win, I can help the person to become DCE but to be MP in this constituency in 2024, no two ways about that I am going to win the election,”

Kwame A Plus

Hip-hop musician Kwame Asare Obeng (A Plus) has a strong interest in politics and social issues. He first gained fame by singing about the events leading up to and during Ghana’s general elections in 2000.

During the 2000 elections, he made his album “Freedom of Speech” available. The song Mesuro Mpo Na Merekeka Yi O, which translates to “I’m afraid of what I’m saying, but I’ll say it anyway,” criticized politicians in general. The song became an instant smash due to his clever and largely correct presentation of political events.

He published “Freedom of Speech II” in 2001 as a follow-up, warning the incoming administration to improve or face losing power in 2004.

After the 2004 general elections, he hit back with the single, Agye Gon – analyzing the 2004 campaign process. In 2007 he changed his approach, this time he specifically talked about Ghana’s Parliament in his somewhat poignant, “Letter to Parliament”. The Letter to Parliament won him a nomination for Best Hip-life Song at the 2008 edition of the Ghana Music Awards.

In between his releases, A Plus also tried his hands on stand-up comedy with relative success. He has carved a niche for himself as the witty politically incorrect artist but in his later single, “A Letter to the West” featuring Praye; he makes a complete u-turn to spit conscious and politically correct lyrics about Africa’s bane of poor leadership.

He talks about wars and poverty in Africa resulting from stinking political leadership. Other popular songs of his are Agye gon, two paddies, Zilo, Mansa, Asem kese, Igwe, among others.

The Honorable Naana Eyiah Quansah is currently the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central in the Central Region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). She is currently the Deputy Minister of Interior. She has been a Member of Parliament for the Constituency since 2016 and is likely to contest again in the party’s parliamentary primaries ahead of the December 7 2024 General Elections.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress is yet to elect its candidate for the Gomoa Central Constituency. The Constituency is one of the fifteen constituencies that could not partake in the party’s May 13 2023 parliamentary primaries due to some outstanding issues of dispute that the party is yet to resolve.
