Alan’s Independent Candidature Will Upset NPP Chances In Ashanti Region- Kennedy Agyapong

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has indicated that the independent candidacy of former Trade Minister under the current administration, Mr Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen will upset the chances of the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 General Election.

The Assin Central Member of Parliament’s comment comes after the withdrawal and subsequent resignation of the former Trade Minister and four times presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party to contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 General Elections citing alleged intimidation and abuse of his supporters among others.

Speaking in a media interview on Thursday night October 5, 2023, Mr. Agyapong argued that Mr Alan Kyerematen’s independent candidature will undermine the chances of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the 2024 General Elections.

“Anybody who thinks Alan Kyerematen’s exit will not pose a challenge to the NPP, the person is not a good politician. You can call his bluff but when the time comes you will see what will happen. In the Ashanti region, they are just deceiving themselves, when they see Bawumia here, Mahama and Alan here, Alan will sweep the votes.  When you look at Alan’s personality, people love him the way he is”.

According to the NPP flagbearer aspirant if Osofo Kyiri Abosum who is not a politician could receive three per cent in the 2020 General Elections, then Mr Alan Kyerematen would be a mightier force in the next election.

He predicted that Mr Alan Kyerematen could get 10 to 15 per cent of votes in the 2024 General Elections.

“Because I am a grassroots man, Alan going independent is a big problem to us. I am telling you. I will speak the truth and nothing else. Anybody who says Alan is not relevant in the NPP so he should go means that person doesn’t like the party.

Kennedy Agyapong Accuses Colleagues MP’s Of Betrayal

The flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Agyapong also expressed his displeasure about how some colleague Members of Parliament whom he supported their bid to Parliament in the 2020 General Elections have snubbed him to support the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party presidential race.

Mr Kennedy Agyapong noted that he was very shocked and pained at the level of betrayal these Members of Parliament had shown him.

“My wife keeps telling me to try and control the rage, I am very bitter. If I had not contested, I wouldn’t have known my enemies. These MPs, the help that I have given them and some of them they come and their excuse is that if I support you… and it is true. One of them that I have helped, I will never forgive him. If you’re not even going to vote for me you have a choice, I don’t have a problem. I went there to campaign for this MP to win and this man picked a phone and called delegates and said don’t vote for Ken Agyapong, vote for number 2 on the ballot.

Then one of them asked him, why? He said Ken Agyapong makes reckless statements. I’m talking about Bibiani MP, I campaigned for him. I left his place at 1:00 a.m. For this man to say I talk recklessly, I can never forgive that guy. When they sacked him from BOST, he was always in my house till about 1:00 am consoling him. If you won’t vote for me, no problem, but for you to tell delegates in your area that I speak recklessly, I leave him to God”.

Mr Kennedy Agyapong further alleged that some of the Members of Parliament were threatened not to support his candidature in the party’s presidential primaries, a situation he described as very unfortunate.

“One MP declared that he was going to support me and they threatened him that your market at Akim Oda they are not going to do it. That is how bad the situation is, they have threatened a lot of MPs that if you don’t follow one person, they are going to bring another person to contest you, and all of them are afraid”.
