The Greater Accra Regional Youth Wing of the opposition National Democratic Congress has written to the Ghana Police Service demanding update on the arrest of sixteen persons suspected to be affiliated to the New Patriotic Party who invaded Accra based television UTV live programme on Saturday night, October 7 2023.
In a letter dated Monday October 9 2023, addressed to the Ghana Police Service, the Regional Youth Organizer of the party, Amorse, Amos Blessing is seeking to the know the whereabouts of the sixteen persons after their arrest by the Ghana Police Service.
“I hope this request finds you in good health. I write for and on behalf of the regional youth wing of the NDC, who has keen interest in peace and stability within our region. This request is follow up on information on your social media handlers that the Ghana Police Service on Saturday, October 7 2023 arrested sixteen (16) persons who without lawful excuse, invaded the studios of UTV to disrupt a live programme”.

According to the Youth Wing, the information regarding the arrest of the sixteen persons still remains sketchy as the Ghana Police Service only indicated that they were at the Police Station to assist investigations.
Mr Amos Blessing mentioned that he knows the identities of the sixteen persons who invaded the live programme of the Accra based Television station and extended his outfit’s commitment to help the Ghana Police Service to find them if it has not arrested them.
“Though you did not provide the identity of the lawless young men, which your social media post described as certain persons’, we have watched video footages of the shameful incident and have identified almost everybody that took active part in that act.
We believe by now, that, their identities are not in doubt so far as police investigations are concerned. However, if for some mysterious reasons you are yet to identify them, we wish to state that, they are NPP hooligans, mainly constituency youth organizers in the region who were led by their Deputy Regional youth organizer, Mandela Wiafe. The same person led thugs to assault registrants at Achimota this month an incident the Police appears to remain lukewarm on”.

The opposition NDC Greater Accra Regional Youth Organizer further alleged that, the sixteen men are members of the New Patriotic Party who were led by the party’s Greater Accra Deputy Regional Youth Commander.
He therefore called on the Ghana Police Service to as matter of urgency and in the spirit rule of law make public the steps it has taken upon the arrest of the sixteen persons, believe to be affiliated to the ruling New Patriotic Party.
“We make this request against the backdrop of the fact that , on May 3, 2023 when one Hardi Pagzaa and Mumuni Osman allegedly invaded Dagbon Fm in the Northern region , the Police hurriedly arrested them on May 8 arraigned them before a Tamale District Court and by May 11, they were convicted and fined GHS3,600. The speed with which the Police did this was commendable.
In these, the Police updated Ghanaians on the identity, political affiliations and the prosecution process. If others engaged in similar act and they were convicted, the instant case of NPP brigands cannot be handled differently”.

Mr Amos Blessing also admonished the Ghana Police Service to discharge its mandate with fairness and transparency.
According to him, the 1992 Constitution of Ghana is explicitly clear on equality before the law, hence the police must do everything possible to uphold such principle in the constitution.
“There cannot be different laws for NPP hoodlums because their Party is in government, and another law for Ghanaians who do not have their party in government. These NPP thugs cannot claim to be unassailable because their Party is in government”.
Amorse, Amos Blessing
Mr Amos Blessing therefore cautioned that if the Ghana Police Service failed to take actions against the sixteen persons that were engaged in Saturday night’s act at the United Television, the Greater Accra Regional Youth Wing of the NDC will advise itself going forward
“If some strange reasons, the Police decides to let these criminals walk free, then we may as well come to the unimpeachable conclusion that the laws of this country have made way for street gangsterism. In that regrettable case, respectfully, I can assure you that the youth wing I lead in the Greater Accra would henceforth have no regard for anything called law and order in the region”.
