The former President and the National Democratic Congress Flagbearer for the 2024 general election, John Dramaini Mahama is set to donate some relief items to the victims of the recent flood devastation occasioned by the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillages on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Sogakope in the South Tongu Municipality.

In a statement released by the Volta Regional Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress,  Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze the exercise will be carried out at a brief ceremony by the Leadership of the party and Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament on behalf of the former President and  Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress,  H.E. John Dramani Mahama.

According to him the benevolent gesture of the former President and the National Democratic Congress Flagbearer underscores his usual commitment to providing immediate humanitarian assistance to those grappling with the aftermath of such an unexpected calamity.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) has expressed deep concern over the recent flooding incident of communities along the lower Volta Basin occasioned by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams’.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 19 2023, the Union sympathized with the communities in the North, South, Central Tongu district and other districts in the Volta Region impacted by the flood resulting from the Akososmbo and Kpong dam spillage.

The National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) further revealed that it has begun plans to visit the communities that were severely hit by the flood and donate some relief items to them.

Additionally, the National Union of Ghanaian Students called all well-meaning Ghanainas and all stakeholders including non-governmental organizations, humanitarian institutions, corporate bodies, and private individuals to swiftly extend their support and assistance to the National Disaster Management Organization to provide relief packages to the affected communities.

Nearly, a week after the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillage began to flood communities at the lower Volta Basin in the Volta Region, reports indicate that over twenty-six thousand people have been displaced with many properties destroyed.

This has generated calls by well-meaning Ghanaians including the former President, John Dramaini Mahama, the North Tongu Memeber of Parlaiment, Samule Okudjato Ablakwa, the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana among others for President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency over the communities affected by the flood.

For instance, former President John Dramani Mahama argued that it is clear that the scope and scale of the flooding of communities along the Volta River are bigger than Ghana’s crippled economy can bear and therefore there is the need for President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency.

However, Dr Ishmael Norman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Security, Disaster and Emergency Studies argued that there are several technicalities involved in the declaration of a state of emergency in Ghana, hence President  Akufo-Addo is not going to declare a state of emergency.
