Minority Demands President Akufo-Addo To Apologize Over His Comment To Flood Victims

Minority Caucus in Parlaiment

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo_Addo over the comment he made during his visit to some communities that were affected by the flood resulting from the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillage.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, called on President Akufo-Addo to render an unqualified apology to the victims of the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillage-induced flood for his unfortunate remarks.

According to the Minority leader, the Minority Caucus in Parliament is very disappointed in the remarks made by President Akufo-Addo under such a critical situation.

“It shows the government doesn’t care that much about the people of the Volta Region. On behalf of the people of Ghana, the National Democratic Congress Minority in Parliament wants to apologise to the people of the Volta Region for the statement made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. We consider that statement very unfortunate, and this statement should not come from the father of the land in times like this. It surprises us, and we are disappointed in the statement coming from H.E. the President”.

The National Democratic Congress and the Minority Caucus in Parliament have donated some relief items to the victims of the recent flood devastation occasioned by the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillages on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Sogakope in the South Tongu Municipality.

“Today His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has given us items to donate to show our concerns about the unfortunate events. We know that these may not be enough but it is our widow’s mite; we came here with two thousand bags of rice, five hundred boxes of cooking oil, five hundred boxes of tin tomatoes, five hundred boxes of tin fish, and thousands of boxes of water. Together the National Democratic Congress as a party is spending approximately GHS 1.5 million for this donations”.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, also called on the government to compensate the victims of the spillage.

Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey also noted that the Volta River Authority should have put appropriate measures in place to avoid the devastating damages the flood of the spillage has caused to communities and peoples’ livelihoods.

Additionally, the National Democratic Congress party leadership led by Honorable Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and Honorabe Fiifi Kwertey toured the affected flooded communities resulting from the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillage flood that has caused huge destructions to lives, properties and livelihoods and communities.

The party leadership was also accompanied by the Minority Caucus leadership led by Honorable Ato Forson, and Hon. Emmanuel Bedzrah, Volta MPs caucus chairman together with the former Speaker of Parliament Hon. Edward Doe Adzaho.

NDC Tours Volta Flood Victims

The National Democratic Congress through their tour engaged with the affected residents of the various communities in the Volta Region.

Exactly a week after the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillage began to flood communities at the lower Volta Basin in the Volta Region, reports indicate that over twenty-six thousand people have been displaced with many properties destroyed.

Several Ghanaians and groups including former President John Daramaini Mahama, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudjato Ablakwa, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, and the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana among others have all called on President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency due to the severe nature of the flood.
