NDC Defends Mahama’s Alternative Policy

NDC Defends Mahama’s Alternative Policy

Abass Nurudeen Esq.

The opposition National Democratic Congress has refuted claims that the party and its Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama have not outlined a single alternative policy since it went to opposition in 2016.

In a statement issued by the National Democratic Congress Ashanti Regional Communications Officer, Abass Nurudeen Esq., the party indicated that claims that the National Democratic Congress and its flagbearer for the 2024 general elections have failed to outline a single alternative policy is baseless and ill-informed.

According to Mr Nurudeen, the National Democratic Congress and its Flagbearer have outlined visionary and transformative policies that would spearhead economic growth and development when elected to office in 2025.

“For the education of the pro-NPP self-styled analyst, President Mahama outlined visionary policies in the NDC’s 2020 Peoples’ Manifesto”, which he continues to canvass. This includes; The Big Push – a $10 billion investment in infrastructure, meant to substantially scale up and transform the country’s public infrastructure.  Free Primary Healthcare – a Policy that seeks to make Healthcare delivery in CHP compounds, clinics and polyclinics free.

“A 24-hour economy to optimize job creation through a three-shift employment system. A promise to run the leanest government in Ghana’s history with not more than 60 Ministers. A promise to scrap Ex gratia payments by implementing the recommendations contained in the Prof. Fiadjour Constitutional Review Committee report. A promise to see to the completion of the Constitutional review process to address all emerging governance issues and strengthen accountability”.

Furthermore, the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress, Mr. Abass Nurudeen refuted claims that the New Patriotic Party introduced the National Health Issuance Scheme in the country.

According to him, it was under the late former President Rawlings and the National Democratic Congress administration between 1993 and 2001 that National Health Insurance was first piloted.

He noted that records captured by the Hansard of Parliament and several media publications show that the New Patriotic Party in opposition led by former President John Agyekum Kufour openly opposed the single National Health Insurance scheme at the time when the National Democratic Congress was introduced.

Mr Abass Nurudeen further strongly asserted that the policy of a single National Health Insurance Scheme was first implemented by the late former President John Evans Atta Mills and the Mahama administration in 2012.

“On his claim that the National Health Insurance Scheme was the brainchild of former President Kuffour, it is important to point out that President Kuffuor never promised a National Health Insurance Scheme but rather a Mutual Health Insurance scheme. There is a big difference between the two”.

Moreover, Mr Abass Nurudeen emphasized that it was the National Democratic Congress administration under former President John Dramani Mahama that started the implementation of a progressively free senior High school programme in 2015/2016 for over 500,000 day Students, with the medium-term objective to roll out the program on a wholesale basis.

According to him, the vision of former President Mahama was not to compromise the quality of senior high schools and to avoid the attendant problems of the double-track system which has been witnessed under President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration.

Additionally, the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress argued that the record of President Mahama in office remains unassailable as his vision for Ghana also remained unparalleled.

He noted that no amount of sponsored vilification by the New Patriotic Party and its hirelings can discredit the distinguished accomplishment of former President John Mahama in the sight of the Ghanaian people who have seen superior records of the National Democratic Congresses against the abysmal record of the New Patriotic Party in government.

“Dr. Keskine Owusu Poku ought to be reminded, that governance is not about cheap sloganeering which is what the NPP is known for. Governance is about pursuing sincere, practicable and sustainable policies that bring development and meaningful transformation in the lives of a people”.
