Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP Flagbearer 2024 General Elections

The Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made history to win the New Patriotic Party presidential primaries and become the first non-Akan flagbearer to lead the New Patriotic in the 2024 general election in the country.

In a fierce contest between the Vice President and the Assin Central Member of Parliament in the party’s Saturday’s November 4 National Delegates Conference, the Vice President won to compete against the former President and the National Democratic Congress flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 general elections.

According to the official results declared by the Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Dr Serebour Quaicoe at the Accra Sports Stadium the Vice President,  Dr Maamudu Bawumia polled 118210 votes representing 61.47% while his closest contender, the Assin Central lawmaker, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong polled 71996 votes representing 37.41%.

The former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto who placed a distant third polled 1459 votes representing 0.76% while Addai-Nimoh, the former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti Region garnered a meagre 781 representing 0.41%.

In the headquarters of the New Patriotic Party, out of the 393 valid votes cast, Dr. Bawumia garnered 254, while Kennedy Agyapong, his closest competitor, received 133 votes and  Francis Addai-Nimoh received 4 votes, while the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Afriyie Akoto, garnered 2 votes.

Again, the Vice President won the Upper East  Region as he secured 5218 votes while the the Assin Central lawmaker also secured 2111 votes Francis Addai-Nimoh secured 177 votes, while the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Afriyie Akoto, got 95 votes. 

Furthermore, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the Ashanti Region with overwhelming votes of 22,2025 as against 11, 390 votes for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong while Francis Addai Nimo got  74 votes and the former Food and Agriculture Minister had 167 votes.

In the Eastern Region, the Vice President received 13387 votes while the Assin Central lawmaker also secured 11,39 votes and  Francis Addai-Nimoh secured 67 votes, while the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Afriyie Akoto, got 57 votes. 

Moreover, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the Upper West Region with overwhelming votes of 4,878 as against 1084 votes for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong while Francis Addai Nimo got 77 votes and the former Food and Agriculture Minister had 176 votes.

In the the Western Region, the Vice President garnered 7405 votes while the Assin Central lawmaker also secured 4899 votes while Francis Addai-Nimoh secured 45 votes, and the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Afriyie Akoto, got 91 votes.

Additionally, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the Bono Region with 5434 votes, the Oti Region with 3591 votes, the Savannah Region with 2603 votes, the North East Region with 3444 votes and the Greater Region with 19002 votes.

Kennedy Agyapong Pulls A Surprise, Wins Two Regions

However, the Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong shocked several Ghanaians including the supporters of the Vice President as he secured a total votes of 71996 and won two regions after the polls of the New Patriotic Party presidential primaries.

The presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party won the Central Region with 10828 votes as against 6159 votes for the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and 36 votes for Dr. Owusu Afryie Akoto while Francis Addai Nimo secured 27 votes.

Again, the Assin Central Member of Parliament overwhelmingly secured 5984 as against the Vice President’s votes of 4984 in the Volta Region.

A total of 193339 delegates voted in Saturday’s presidential primary with a total valid votes of 192, 441 with 898 votes rejected and the turnout was 94.63%.
