Have you ever yearned for a World Cup final featuring Ronaldo and Messi?

Well, in the realm of Ghanaian politics, the excitement is building as the nation anticipates a showdown between two prominent figures, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 General Elections. This political El Classico promises to be a fierce battle that will shape the nation’s destiny until January 7, 2025.

However, the elctions will be a choice between to “evils” given the burdens of liabilities both lead contenders carry along a blessing of experience.

The 2024 election isn’t just a contest between political parties; it’s a duel between two seasoned leaders, both of whom have held the reins of power before. John Mahama, a veteran in the political arena, commenced his journey as an MP for the Bole/Bamboi Constituency in 1996 and rose through the ranks to become the Minister of Communications before the NDC’s handover to the NPP’s John Agyekum Kufour.

In contrast, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a technocrat, made his political debut when he was chosen as Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s running mate in 2008. His prominence skyrocketed during the 2012 Election Petition Case, where he delivered his memorable “you and I were not there” testimony, leaving an indelible mark on Ghana’s political landscape.

Both candidates have left their mark on the presidency. John Mahama served as Vice President during President John Fifi Atta Mills’ tenure and later assumed the presidency in 2012, completing the term until January 7, 2013. Subsequently, he won the 2012 general elections but lost in 2016. Dr. Bawumia’s role as an economist and his outspoken criticisms of Mahama’s government, branding it as incompetent and corrupt, played a pivotal role in shaping the 2016 election narrative.

The 2024 elections will undoubtedly focus on scrutinizing the records of both candidates. Ghanaians will hold John Dramani Mahama and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia accountable for their promises, actions, and inactions over the past sixteen years, following John Agyekum Kufour’s presidency.

Despite their accomplishments, both candidates share the burden of past failures, and Ghanaians are keenly aware of their responsibilities. Economic stability, infrastructure development, power dynamics, corruption, and employment will be key areas of contention.

Analysts hold differing opinions about the NPP’s chances in the election, with some suggesting that economic stability is the key, while others argue that the NDC’s Mahama has capitalized on the issues of the last seven years, making the NPP’s prospects uncertain.

In a break from tradition, the 2024 election will see a Northern faceoff between the “Bole Boy” and the “Tamale Boy,” as the northern region, which has traditionally supplied the country’s Vice Presidents, now vies for the presidency.

In terms of legacies, Mahama boasts a wealth of infrastructure projects across the country, while Bawumia will highlight his digitization agenda. Both will have to answer for their handling of the economy, power, corruption, and employment issues.

In preparation for the upcoming election, both camps are urged to acknowledge past mistakes as they craft a new set of promises for the Ghanaian electorate. The responsibility ultimately falls on the shoulders of the Ghanaian people, and the anticipated fierce nature of the election will require active participation from civil society and relevant stakeholders to strengthen the democratic process.

The selection of running mates for both candidates is expected to play a pivotal role in this political saga, making for a riveting contest.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially elected Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2024 General Elections. Dr. Bawumia’s victory in the party’s presidential primary, with a substantial lead over his closest rival Kennedy Agyapong, marks the beginning of a challenging journey to Jubilee House. The role of the Central Region and Greater Accra, both as historically deciding regions, will be instrumental in determining the final outcome of this political showdown.

It is either a Break of the 8 or the 8 is Broken. Invariably, the best wins and worst losses.
