Israel Faces Criticism For Attack On Schools In Gaza

Palestinians react at the damages at a UN-run school sheltering displaced people, following an Israeli strike, in Jabalia.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has condemned Israel’s renewed bombardment of schools in the Jabalia refugee camp located at northern Gaza.

Doha also called for “an urgent international investigation and independent investigators to probe Israel’s targeting of schools and hospitals

These came as Israel’s air force bombed the UN-operated al-Fakhoora school and later attacked another in Tal al-Zaatar. The UN-run schools in northern Gaza housed thousands of war-displaced Palestinians.

The attack led to the death of many, mostly women and children.

In a post on X, Adele Khodr, the UN agency’s regional director for Middle East and North Africa, said that the scenes of “carnage and death” following Israeli attacks on al-Fakhoora and Tal al-Zaatar schools in northern Gaza “are horrific and appalling.”

“Children, schools and shelters are not a target,” she asserted.

Also, the Head of the UN’s Palestine relief agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini said that the agency received “horrifying” images and footage of many people killed and injured in the attack.

“These attacks cannot become commonplace, they must stop. A humanitarian ceasefire cannot wait any longer,” Lazzarini said in a post on X.

More so, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted in a statement that the al-Fakhoora School attack proves that Israel’s declared war on civilians aims to empty the entire northern Gaza Strip area of all Palestinian presence.

Commenting on the bombing of al-Fakhoora School, Hamas said in a statement, that it would hold Israel accountable for the attack and its crimes against children and civilians.

It is said that the Al-Fakhoora School was bombed in 2009, 2014, and this is the second time this month that it’s been bombed.

Battle Not Over

According to top Iranian commander, Israel is in for a long and bloody war with Hamas.

At a rally in the capital Tehran, which was aired live on state TV, Revolutionary Guard Commander, Hossein Salami said, “The battle is not over.”

He asserted that the Islamic world “will do whatever it has to do,” adding, “There are still great [unused] capacities left.”

Salami said this without referring to any possible moves by Iran to join the conflict.

“Palestine stands on the path of a war of attrition … Israel will face a definitive defeat and end up in the dustbin of history,” Salami said.

“The Zionist regime [Israel] can no longer see peace and security. Muslims will take revenge on behalf of the oppressed people of Gaza, and this revenge has no expiration date.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry called on the international community to help stop the “killing machine and organised terrorism of the Zionist regime against the Palestinian people, and hold Zionist criminals accountable to justice and international law.”

Also on Saturday, thousands of Iranians took part in state-sponsored marches to protest the deaths of children and other civilians in the Gaza war.

State television showed some protesters carrying bundled white shrouds symbolising the children killed in Gaza during the nationwide rallies.

In Tehran, crowds of demonstrators waved Palestinian flags while others held banners reading “Down with America” and “Down with Israel.”

Others burned Israeli flags while some waved the flags of Lebanese group Hezbollah, Iran’s ally, which has been engaged in border skirmishes with Israel since October 7, 2023.
