Some Members of the Queen Mothers Association of Ghana in Parliament

Queen Mothers Association from all sixteen (16) regions in the country has taken an interest in acquainting themselves with the Legislative Processes in Ghana’s Parliament.  

According to correspondence from the Parliament House of Ghana, the members of the association were taken through the fundamental parliamentary processes of the House, emphasizing on the functions of Parliament, and how traditional authorities and their communities can participate in the country’s parliamentary democracy.

The Queen Mothers were also hosted by the Rt Honorable Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, in an interactive session as part of their familiarization processes in Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament in his address spoke on issues of gender disparity in Ghana’s traditional governance institutions and indicated that the concerns of the Queen Mothers would be presented to the Committee on Gender and Children of Parliament for onward consideration.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin further added that the Affirmation Action Bill, which is yet to be passed by Parliament also seeks to remove such discrimination and improve the rights of marginalised groups in the country.

Queen Mothers Call For Representation In Regional And National House Chiefs

Moreover, the President of the Association of Queen Mothers in Ghana and the Paramount Queen Mother of the Nkonya Traditional Area, Nana Otuba II advocated for a fair and balanced representation of queen mothers in the Regional and the National House of Chief in the country.

Nana Otubea II highlighted the importance of the representation of queen mothers in the National and Regional House of Chiefs and underscored the integral role played by queen mothers in the traditional governance systems.

According to Nana Otubea II despite the significant role queen mothers in Ghana play in the traditional governance system of the country, they are often excluded from decision-making processes.

She thus called on Parliament, the government and all stakeholders in the country to take urgent steps and measures to address the exclusion of queen mothers in decision-making processes in the country particularly at the level of the National and Regional House of Chiefs.

Some Members of Parliament who were present include Honorable Helen Adjoa Ntosu, Member of Parliament for Krachi East in the Oti Region, Honorable Kobina Mensah Woyome, Member of Parliament for South Tongu in the Volta Region and Member of Parliament for Krachi Nchumuru, Honorable Solomon Kuyon.  

Other Members of Parliament present were, Honorable Wisdom Gidisu, Member of Parliament for Krachi West in the Oti Region, and Honorable Betty Nana Kroabi Mensah, Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North Constituency in the Eastern Region.

It is recalled that the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin on November 27 2023 announced to Members of Parliament of his coronation as chief of the Suman-Ahenkro Traditional Area with his stool name ‘Nana Adasowko I’.

According to the Speaker, his coronation as chief of the Suman-Ahenkoro Traditional Area was an honour to Ghana’s Parliament as an institution of the state.

“Honorable Members, I also have some good news and joy to share with you. Happily, I was coronated as a chief of the Suman traditional area. My stool name is Nana Adasowko I of the Suman traditional area. This was done in honour of the institution of parliament and my good self for our commitment to further the values, the norms, the traditions, the cults, and the principles of our people”.
