Unifying the NPP: The Crucial Role of Parliamentary Candidates In Breaking The Eight

NPP Delegates Elections; “Young”, Unblemished Yet Side-lined

NPP Flag

As the political stage sets for Ghana’s 2024 general elections, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stands at a critical crossroads, balancing internal dynamics with the overarching goal of securing victory and breaking the eight-year cycle. The party’s parliamentary primaries in orphan constituencies underscored the significance of fostering unity among its ranks, specifically among parliamentary candidates, recognizing the indispensable role a cohesive front plays in electoral success.

Winners, losers, past, incumbents, and candidates must therefore assume an all hands on deck approach, if the NPP is to win the 2024 elections.

A compelling instance highlighting this imperative is Nii Lante Bannerman, a parliamentary hopeful in the Odododiodoo constituency, who, despite defeat, pledged unwavering support for Abdul Manaf Nii Adjei Sowah, the triumphant candidate. Bannerman’s commitment to prioritizing the party’s interests serves as a poignant reminder of the need for solidarity within the NPP.

“The delegates of Odododiodioo have spoken and they have spoken well enough for all of us to accept so I have to accept the verdict of the delegates. I am a party person and for me party first so I am ready to help the party in whatever way I can going forward.”

Similarly, Richard Nyamah, defeated in the Kpandai constituency, with humility and determination, rallied behind the victorious Matthew Nyindam. Nyamah’s acknowledgment of campaign challenges and his pledge to contribute to Kpandai’s liberation underscored, again, the significance of a united front in achieving the party’s objectives.

“And I pray and I promise that I will put my shoulder to the wheel to ensure that my brother Matthew Nyindam and our Vice President His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia become the MP and the President respectively.”

The party must deliberately and actively encourage more of such from all defeated parliamentary candidates.

As well, the connection between the parliamentary candidates and the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is crucial, especially as some political analysts express concerns about his perceived lack of immense confidence among electorates.

Therefore, parliamentary candidates serve as key players in propelling the NPP to success by actively contributing to the flagbearer’s campaign. The localized campaigns of parliamentary candidates could establish a vital grassroots connection, amplifying the party’s message and garnering support at the constituency level. By aligning their efforts with Dr. Bawumia’s overarching vision, these candidates will not only solidify local support but will also significantly contribute to the collective success of the NPP in the broader electoral landscape.

Despite the pivotal role parliamentary candidates play, the risk of “skirt and blouse voting” persists. Skirt and blouse voting, where voters support a presidential candidate from one party while choosing a parliamentary candidate from another, poses a challenge. To counter this, parliamentary candidates must align closely with the party’s overall message, demonstrate a strong commitment to its principles, and emphasize the importance of a unified government. Effective communication about the synergy between the presidential and parliamentary candidates can help voters see the value in supporting the entire party ticket, reducing the likelihood of split voting and enhancing the NPP’s electoral prospects.

Dr. Bawumia, the flagbearer, echoed the importance of unity, from grassroots to leadership levels, expressing confidence in the party’s ability to secure a majority in the orphan constituencies during the upcoming elections. His emphasis on internal cooperation, highlighted in the meticulous organization and peaceful conduct of the December 2 parliamentary primaries in the orphan constituencies, set the stage for a broader participation of NPP’s rank and file towards breaking the “8 in 2024.”

“With the upcoming 2024 general elections in sight, I am very impressed by the quality of candidates chosen to represent our Party in these constituencies. In the coming election, I am confident that we will succeed in securing these seats through our sustained unity and collective efforts.

“To keep our momentum and to accomplish victory, we need to stay united from the grassroots down to the highest levels of leadership.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Dr. Bawumia extended congratulations to the newly-elected parliamentary candidates, emphasizing that their victories mark the beginning of a new chapter of service and responsibility.

His call for humility and grace among the winners, coupled with gratitude towards aspirants who faced defeat, reflects a leadership approach that values inclusivity and acknowledges the diverse contributions of party members.

Dr. Bawumia’s unwavering commitment to breaking the eight-year cycle in the 2024 elections is evident in his call for sustained unity and collective efforts. The phrase “Breaking the 8” symbolizes the NPP’s ambition to secure a third consecutive term in government. To achieve this, a united parliamentary front is not merely desirable; it is essential.
