VRA Establishes Scholarship Fund For Students In Flood Affected Communities

Flood Communities in the Volta River

The Volta River Authority has established a Scholarship fund to provide financial assistance to students within the communities that were affected by floods occasioned by the Akosombo dam spillage in the Lower banks of the Volta River.

The Volta River Authority in a press statement on Thursday, December 7 2023 indicated that the establishment of the scholarship fund is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

According to the statement, the scholarship fund, which is under its Community Development Programme (CDP) Scholarship Scheme would provide financial support to brilliant but needy students within the communities that were impacted by the spillage of the Akosombo dam by the Authority.

Again, the Volta River Authority thus called on the various stakeholders of education within the communities that were impacted by the flood resulting from the dam spillage to provide to the Authority names of students who qualified for the 2023/2024 Academic year and gained admission into any Public Tertiary Institution as a regular non-fee paying student.

“Please note that the emphasis of the awards is on Brilliant but Needy. Potential applicants are to visit the CSR page under www.vra.com to download the scholarship application forms. The completed application form and the additional relevant document must be submitted to the Community Relations Office in Akosombo. Please be informed that the deadline for submission of applications is on January 15, 2024”.

VRA Outlines Criteria For Award Of Scholarship

Furthermore, the Volta River Authority outlined the various criteria it would consider in awarding scholarships to student within the communities that were impacted by the Akosombo dam spillage.

According to the statement, a student is qualified to receive its scholarship if the student is a native of any of the communities that were impacted by the dam spillage and also attended a public basic school within the same communities.

Again, the statement indicated that such a student must have obtained between aggregates 6-24 at the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) levels and he or she must have gained admission into a public tertiary institution in the country as a regular non-fee paying student.

According to the Volta River Authority statement, every student that applies for it scholarship fund must attach copies of their admission letter, basic education, and senior high school certificates.

The statement thus emphasized that students who would be selected for the Volta River Scholarship Award would benefit from support at the tertiary level for hostel, Student Representative Council, and academic user fees.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Ghanaian Students has deployed a team of volunteers to provide teaching support to some of the districts that their education activities were severely impacted due to the devastating damages of the flood.

According to the Union, some of the districts that have benefited from its teaching volunteerism initiative include the North, Central and South Tongu Districts of the Volta Region.

“As part of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) mandate to carter for the welfare of the over 12.5 million Ghanaian students, the union embarked on a mission to support the flood-induced victims in the North, Central and South Tongu Districts. The Union is working hard to provide them with the help and resources they need during this challenging time”.

The National Union of Ghanaian Students also provided some relief items and other stationary items to the students in the flood affected communities.
