The government is seeking approval for the reconstruction of 27.7 kilometers of the Tema motorway enclave, extending into Tesano and Achimota, with a proposed budget of US$338 million.

The joint committee comprising Finance and Roads and Transport is currently reviewing the agreement, which spans 37 months and is poised to bring significant improvements to transportation in the affected areas.

Patrick Boamah, Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, outlined the scope of the project during a press briefing in Parliament on Monday, December 11.

“Somebody will say why is Accra Tema-Mortoway going to cost US$338 million without knowing the nature of work or the scope of work.

“Accra-Tema Motorway alone is 19.5 kilometers, but this project is 27.7 kilometers, so one will ask where are you getting the remainder from? The Apenkawa Interchange and the construction of the Neoplan Interchange. So this is the scope of work that is going to happen so you tell from what I have told you that it is going to be a very comprehensive programme which will span a period of about 3 years or more depending on how the project goes and it is going to be a joint venture  between Maripoma Limited and Ghana Infrastructure Fund.”

The Accra-Tema Motorway: A Historical Landmark Facing Deterioration Concerns

The Accra-Tema Motorway, a vital transportation artery in Ghana’s capital city, has a rich history dating back to its construction in the 1960s. However, recent concerns have emerged regarding its deteriorating condition, raising questions about the need for urgent attention and maintenance.

The Accra-Tema Motorway, officially known as the N1 Highway, was constructed to connect the country’s major port city, Tema, with the capital, Accra. It was a symbol of progress and a significant part of Ghana’s infrastructure development during its post-independence era. The motorway played a crucial role in facilitating trade, commerce, and transportation between these two key economic hubs.

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the deteriorating nature of the Accra-Tema Motorway. Commuters and motorists have reported numerous issues, including potholes, inadequate road markings, insufficient lighting, and drainage problems. These issues not only pose safety risks but also contribute to traffic congestion and delays.

The deteriorating condition of the motorway has raised concerns about the safety of commuters and motorists. Potholes and uneven surfaces can cause accidents and damage vehicles, while insufficient lighting increases the risk of accidents, especially during night-time travel. Additionally, poor drainage can lead to waterlogging, further exacerbating road hazards.

The Accra-Tema Motorway, designed to alleviate traffic congestion between Accra and Tema, is now experiencing congestion itself due to its deteriorating state. The lack of proper road markings and signage contributes to confusion and traffic bottlenecks. As a result, the motorway, intended to facilitate smooth travel, has become a source of frustration for commuters and a hindrance to economic activities along its route.

Recognizing the concerns and the importance of the Accra-Tema Motorway, the Ghanaian government has acknowledged the need for urgent action. Plans for the rehabilitation and expansion of the motorway have been announced, including resurfacing of the road, installation of modern drainage systems, improved lighting, and enhanced road markings. These measures aim to restore the motorway’s functionality and ensure the safety and convenience of users.

Addressing the challenges faced by the Accra-Tema Motorway requires collaboration between various stakeholders. The government, in partnership with relevant agencies, should allocate adequate resources for the rehabilitation project. Additionally, public awareness campaigns can encourage responsible use of the motorway and promote adherence to traffic rules and regulations.
