Ghana’s Political “Elclassico”” In 2024

Ghanaian voter

The upcoming local government elections in Ghana, scheduled for December 19, 2023, have prompted the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to call on the media to play an active role in promoting high voter turnout. The call recognized the significant influence that the media can have in fostering civic participation and strengthening democracy.

Voter turnout in these elections have hoovered around 35% all through the fourth republic.

The GJA’s recognition of the media as development agents is commendable. Media outlets possess a powerful platform that can be harnessed to mobilize the public and raise awareness about the importance of local governance. By providing space for candidates, voters, and other electoral participants to express their views, the media can facilitate informed public discourse and empower citizens to make educated choices during the elections.

Moreover, the media has a responsibility to educate the electorate about the significance of local governance and its impact on their daily lives. Many citizens may not fully grasp the role of local government in driving development or the importance of their participation in the electoral process. Through informative and engaging content, the media can bridge this knowledge gap and empower citizens to exercise their democratic rights by casting their votes.

GJA

The GJA rightly emphasized the need for high professional standards in election coverage. The media’s handling of the local government elections should serve as a benchmark for the subsequent 2024 general elections. By adhering to ethical reporting practices, providing balanced coverage, and avoiding sensationalism, the media can foster public trust in the electoral process and contribute to the credibility of democratic institutions.

“The media must also help to educate the electorate on the importance of local governance and the need for them to get involved by going to the polls. The GJA particularly urges the media to exhibit high professional standards in the electioneering, and use the coverage of the local government elections as a test case for Election 2024 that must be passed with excellence.”

GJA

However, the responsibility for achieving high voter turnout does not lie solely with the media. The GJA appropriately encouraged the electorate to recognize the importance of local government elections and actively participate by casting their votes. A strong turnout demonstrates citizens’ commitment to community decision-making and empowers them to shape their own development. It is crucial for individuals to assign the same level of importance to local elections as they do to general elections, as the outcomes of these local elections directly impact their immediate surroundings and quality of life.

DECEN

Ultimately, a vibrant and robust democracy relies on the active participation of its citizens. The media can act as a catalyst for this participation by disseminating information, fostering public discourse, and encouraging civic engagement. By publicizing the local government elections and ensuring high voter turnout, the media and the public can collectively contribute to the strengthening of local governance and the development of communities.

Together, citizens can pave the way for inclusive and prosperous communities, bolstered by an active and engaged citizenry.

The essence of local governments in Ghana’s democracy lies in their ability to bring governance closer to the people, empower local communities, and foster inclusive development. Local governments serve as platforms for citizen participation, enabling individuals to have a direct say in decision-making processes that affect their daily lives. They play a vital role in addressing local needs, delivering essential services, and promoting grassroots development. By decentralizing power and resources, local governments ensure that communities have a voice in shaping their own destinies and contribute to the overall democratic governance of Ghana.
