Highlife musician, Dada Hafco, has endorsed the #PlayGhana agenda which he believes is one of the ways the country can promote its musicians.

The #PlayGhana agenda is a new development that encourages Ghanaian Disc Jockeys (DJs) to play only Ghanaian songs at events as the world heads to Ghana for ‘December in GH’ gives an uplift to Ghanaian artists and the music industry.

The new development has been backed by some Ghanaian celebrities including Dada Hafco. He disclosed that countries like Nigeria are pursuing such a goal, hence, Ghana can also make it happen.

“Unfortunately for Ghana, Ghana is only one of the few countries where anytime a Ghanaian rises to speak for Ghanaians, Ghanaians come to oppose. When you go to foreign countries, and you’re championing an agenda, everybody seems to be in accord with it,” he said.

“For me, I support what they did and I believe that it was for a good cause. In the world today, everybody is trying to sell what they produce. When it comes to music, what is the Ghanaian identity, what is the Ghanaian sound? We do not have any because our space has been saturated by a lot of foreign content,” he further stated.

Dada Hafco also expressed that a system should be created for Ghanaian artists.

“A lot of people are thinking about their stomachs individually but it is not about you and me, it is about the collective. We can’t represent Ghana with two top artists, we need to have a collective, like a system so that when we call Ghanaian artists, we can bring about a hundred. I think it is a very good idea and we need to support it,” he said.

However, the highlife artist outlined some reasons Ghana is dominated by a lot of foreign content than its products.

“When you listento our airwaves, so much foreign content is going on simply because GHAMRO doesn’t work properly, radios do not have managers anymore.

“For that agenda to work, we need to appeal to the people and tell them that foreigners are coming into the country so we need to show them what we have. I think it is a good cause and we should champion it. Eventually, we should find the laws and activate the laws, take them to parliament, and make them legal.”

Hafco has recently released a song titled ‘Puupuu’ and is urging the public to be cautious about succumbing to the allure of extravagant lifestyles depicted on social media.

He emphasizes that these images may be misleading and could exert unnecessary pressure on individuals who give them undue attention.

Describing Social Media As A Blessing And Curse

Dada Hafco who has gained traction in the music industry described social media as a blessing and a curse.

Born Terry Asare Boamah, he emphasized how social media has brought growth to the music industry.

Some benefits he mentioned included the promotion of an artist’s music and helping the artist reach out to a wider audience.

Regarding the drawbacks of the internet, he mentioned that, in contrast to the past, when artists could keep track of the number of records they sold, they now, cannot earn a sufficient living through streaming services.

“I would say that social media is a blessing and a curse. It has brought the world to our doorsteps but at the same time, it has huge positive impacts and negatively as well. For me as an artist, it helps in so many ways; promoting your music, and reaching a wider audience,” he said.

He disclosed that a lot of people are using social media for inappropriate reasons.

“A lot of people have also said that it has diminished their business in the sense that back in the days when you were selling records, you are able to know the number of records you sold unlike the streaming platforms when you can’t get like a million dollar from the number of songs you have streamed. Profitably yes, we are using it but there are a few bad nuts that are coming out of social media. People are using it for a lot of wrong reasons like scamming.”
