NPP Primaries: Tension Brews In Akim Swedru As Residents Call for Change

Kennedy Osei Nyarkoh

A section of residents in the Akim Swedru Constituency have expressed their resentments against Kennedy Osei Nyarkoh, the incumbent Member of Parliament and further urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reconsider their support for the current MP in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries on January 27, 2024.

The sentiments expressed by the constituents revolve around several critical issues plaguing the constituency, with a common thread of dissatisfaction running through their grievances with jobs, infrastructure, and essential services having become focal points in the discontent articulated by the residents.

“Our problem is that we want jobs in the constituency. Secondly, the river Tsitsifo overflows its boundaries to the town, we have complained several times to the MP, he said it is not his job. Also, the road from Oda to this place is in good condition, but from Adeambra and Edusei are in a deplorable state”.

The call for change by some residents in the Akim Swedru Constituency is particularly underlined by a perception that the incumbent Member of Parliament, Honorable Kennedy Osei Nyarkoh has not effectively addressed critical issues facing the constituency.

Some of the residents highlighted challenges with infrastructure, emphasizing half-completed projects and inadequate amenities.

Moreover, some of the traders in the Akim Swedru Constituency accused the incumbent Member of Parliament, Honorable Kennedy Osei Nyarkoh for neglecting the plight of traders in the market.

According to some of the traders, the condition of their market centre is very deplorable to the effect that when it rains water enters majority of the stores in the markets.

The traders further accused the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mr Osei Nyarkoh of failing to deliver on countless of his promises to address the numerous challenges the traders are grappling with in the Akim Swedru Constituency.

Controller And Accountant General Courts Support For His MP Bid

In view of the above, the residents urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party in the Akim Swedru Constituency to vote for the Controller and Accountant General,  Kwasi Kwanning Bosompem to represent the party in the 2024 general elections.

They collectively lauded Mr Kwanning Bosompem’s commitment and dedication towards development within the Akim Swedru Constituency, ranging from, health, jobs, road and educational infrastructures.

Some of the residents further threatened that if in the unlikely event, the incumbent Member of Parliament, Kenendy Osei Nyarko is elected as the parliamentary candidate, they will vote against the New Patriotic Party in the parliamentary elections.

“We don’t want the MP again; he has been on the seat for the past 12 years, yet he has done nothing for the constituency. The police station here is someone’s rented house, no market, no lorry station, all he does is push money to the delegates to vote for him. He doesn’t think about the people in the constituency.

“The plight of the people in the constituency doesn’t matter to him. We want change; four years now we have not seen anything good done by the MP. The roads are half done, the market too the same, no water, no light at the markets. The most worrying situation there is that there are no toilet facilities at the markets. If the Controller can do all these for us, we are waiting for him, we will vote for him”.

As the constituency inches closer to the NPP primaries, the sentiments expressed by constituents present a significant challenge for the incumbent Member of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarkoh as the dissatisfaction voiced by the electorate suggests that retaining him as the party’s candidate might face resistance not only in the primaries but could also carry repercussions into the general elections.

Again, the call for delegates to vote for Mr. Kwasi Kwanning Bosompem, the Controller and Accountant General, further complicates the political landscape for the incumbent MP as constituents are likely to express their dissatisfaction at the ballot box in the December 7, 2024 general elections if the party retains Kennedy Osei Nyarkoh.
