NDC Mourns the Passing of Former MP and Interior Minister, Mark Owen Woyongo

The late Mark Oen Woyongo

The National Democratic Congress and members of the public particularly those in the Northern Region are mourning following the sad demise of Honorable Mark Owen Woyongo, the former Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central Constituency and Ghana’s former Minister of Interior.

The announcement was made by the Navorongo Central branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the political party to which Honorable Woyongo dedicated his service and leadership during his days as a politician and public officer.

“It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hon. Mark Owen Woyongo, the former Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central. Hon. Woyongo, a dedicated and esteemed member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), left us in the late hours of yesterday 17, January 2024”.

The Constituency Communications officer of Navorongo Central of the National Democratic Congress, Babere Alagewe Lemuel Kelly in a press release dated Thursday, January 18 2024 indicated that the late Mark Owen Woyongo was a revered and dedicated member of the National Democratic Congress.

According to him, the news of the departure of the former Minister of Interior under the erstwhile Mahama and the National Democratic Congress administration has left the nation, particularly the Navrongo community, in deep sorrow.

NDC Eulogizes The Late Mark Owen Woyongo

Describing him as not only a respected politician but also a compassionate leader, the National Democratic Congress Communications Officer in the Navrongo Central Constituency highlighted Honorable Woyongo’s unwavering commitment to the betterment of Navrongo Central and Ghana at large.

He recounted that during his tenure as a Member of Parliament for the Navrongo Central Constituency, the late Mark Owen Woyongo demonstrated the true essence of public service, tackling challenges, championing constituents’ interests, and tirelessly working for positive change.

“The loss of Hon. Woyongo is felt not only within the NDC family but also resonates throughout the entire Navrongo community. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, passion, and a commitment to progress.

“As we mourn the passing of Hon. Mark Owen Woyongo, let us also remember and celebrate his remarkable legacy. His dedication, passion, and commitment to the people of Navrongo Central will forever be an inspiration to us all”.

Moreover, the National Democratic Congress in the Navrongo Central Constituency particularly its leadership extended their deepest condolences to the late Honorable Mark Owen Woyongo’s family and the entire members of the Navrongo branch of the National Democratic Congress.

The National Democratic Congress leadership in the Navrongo Central further requested prayers and respect for the family’s privacy during this period of grief.

In addition, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress in the Navrongo Central Constituency conveyed that the details regarding the funeral arrangements for the late  Mark Owen Woyongo will be communicated in due course to offer friends, supporters, and well-wishers the opportunity to pay their last respects to him.

The late Honorable Mark Owen Woyongo was born on 9 June 1946 in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Before his rise into mainstream politics, Mr Woyongo was the Public Relations Officer for the Upper East Regional Administration from 1978 and 1985.

He was later appointed the Regional Information Officer for the Upper East Region in 1985 and in 1994, he was appointed the Minister Counselor for Information at the Ghana High Commission in London, United Kingdom.

Mr Mark Woyongo also became the Minister for the Upper East Region from 2009 – 2012 under the late Professor John Atta Mills’s administration.

He won the 2012 parliamentary elections on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and in the year 2013  he was appointed as the Defence Minister and subsequently to the Ministry of the Interior during former President John Dramani Mahama administration.
