NDC Demands Justice For The Victims Of Ayawaso West Wuogon Bye-Election Disturbances

Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strong statement condemning the disturbances that characterized the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election on January 31 2019, and demanded justice for the victims.

The party’s General Secretary, Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey in a press statement issued on Wednesday, January 31 2024 highlighted the invasion by heavily armed men from the national security of Ghana during the bye-election for the replacement of the former Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, the late Kyerematen Agyarko.

The statement emphasized that the indiscriminate firing of sophisticated assault rifles by state-sanctioned individuals resulted in life-changing injuries for many, prompting the opposition National Democratic Congress to withdraw from the bye-election.

According to Mr Kwetey, the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election witnessed the ‘lowest turnout’ in the history of the country’s Fourth Republic.

“Exactly five years ago today, heavily armed men from the national security of Ghana invaded the bye-election for the replacement of the then-deceased member of Parliament of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region”.

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress further recounted that even though President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo responded to the incident by establishing a high-powered Commission of Enquiry to investigate and make recommendations, the government has failed to implement the recommendations after five years the incident took place.

“The sad reality today is that the government has refused to implement the recommendations of the Commission of Enquiry, thus leaving the seriously injured and economically challenged victims to fend for themselves in an economy destroyed beyond recognition by the singular ineptitude of the Akufo-Addo government”.

Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey

Furthermore, the National Democratic Congress criticized President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party administration of deploying similar tactics in the 2020 general elections, resulting in the loss of lives of eight innocent Ghanaians.

The party specifically raised deep concerns about the government’s commitment to addressing the aftermath of the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election disturbances.

The opposition National Democratic Congress thus urged President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party administration to immediately implement the recommendations of the Emil Short Commission of Enquiry report to provide quick and lasting relief to the victims of the unfortunate event of the 31st January 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon Bye-Election.

NDC Urges Ghanaians To Vote Against NPP Over Ayawaso West Wuogon Bye-Election Disturbances

Moreover, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey called on all Ghanaians to collectively vote against the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and all the party’s parliamentary candidates in the December 7 2024 general elections as a sign of their revulsion towards the event of Ayawaso West Wuogon Bye-E lection.

Mr Kwetey emphasized that voting out the governing New Patriotic Party in December 7 polls would be the most appropriate way by Ghanaians to demand justice for the many innocent Ghanaians who suffered severe injuries during the violence that associated the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election on January 31 2019.

“To bring end to the darkness that has befallen our homeland since the coming of the Akufo-Addo led government of the NPP, the NDC calls on all voters in Ghana to stand ready to massively vote out the Akufo-Addo government which has stained our democracy with the blood of innocent Ghanaians. Ghana deserves to develop in peace and unity all the time”

Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey
