NDC Dismisses Alleged Fake News Campaign Against 24-Hour Economy Policy

Sammy Gyamfi Esq.

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi has vehemently dismissed what he claims to be a fake news campaign orchestrated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against its proposed 24-hour economy policy.

The vociferous Communicator strongly stated that the alleged misinformation involving the circulation of flyers featuring prominent figures of the opposition party including its National Chairman, Johnson Aisedu Nektiah, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Spokesperson to Former President John Dramani Mahama, and Felix Kwakye Ofosu among others are fabricated quotations made by the ruling New Patriotic Party.

Lawyer Gymafi emphasized the vulnerability of some members of the public to such misinformation being spread by the New Patriotic Party and urged the general public not to believe in such ‘fake news’ attributed to some of its members.

“Listening, to kick against the 24-hour economy is tantamount to kicking your beer teeth against a concrete wall. You don’t hurt the concrete wall but you hurt yourself. And that is what the New Patriotic Party is doing to themselves.

“I am serving this note that people should be on alert for fake news and they are going to see a lot of fake news because the NPP anthem is if you miss the ball don’t miss the man. They know they cannot discredit the 24-hour economy policy.

Furthermore, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi strongly argued that the National Democratic Congress, and its flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama’s proposed a 24-hour economy policy is part of its strategy to transform Ghana into an import-substitution and export-led economy.

Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi explained that the policy aims to create a conducive environment for businesses, providing incentives for private enterprises and critical state institutions to operate 24/7 in three shifts.

Moreover, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress elaborated on key aspects of the policy, including the deliberate effort by the party to encourage businesses and government institutions to operate 24 hours throughout the week when it assumes power.

He further stated that the National Democratic Congress plans to establish a special security architecture involving state security institutions and private companies, recruiting young individuals to ensure the safety of businesses under the 24-hour economy when it assumes power.

“It is a deliberate effort that we intend to embark on, we are not going to leave it to chance like Dr Bawumia has said ‘If you want to operate a 24-hour economy do it; if you don’t want to, do not do it’.

“This is a deliberate strategy like it pertains to the United Kingdom where there is a deliberate strategy to encourage businesses and government institutions to operate 24/7 and you are not only going to operate a 24-hour economy but you are going to do it in three shifts. Here if someone goes to work beyond the eight hours, you will pay overtime which would be more expensive than the regular pay you give to the person per hour”.

In addition, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi stated that to motivate companies to participate under the 24-hour economy policy, the National Democratic Congress when elected into power intends to offer cheap electricity through time-of-use tariffs, to provide a discounted power rate during off-peak hours.

According to Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, the party also has plans to stimulate demand by leveraging the government’s procurement power to support businesses operating under the 24-hour economy.

He noted that if the government decides to patronize made-in-Ghana goods that operate under the 24-hour economy, it would automatically create a market operating 24 hours across the week and employ more people.

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress concluded by criticizing the absence of job creation strategies in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s address and stressed the opposition party’s commitment to provide detailed plans for the country’s economic transformation.
