Farewell to Mr Ibu- Nollywood Mourns the Loss of the Veteran Actor

The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, is reeling from the loss of one of its most beloved comedic talents, Mr Ibu.

The actor, whose real name was John Okafor, reportedly passed away at the age of 62 after a prolonged battle with illness.

Known for his infectious laughter and impeccable comedic timing, Mr Ibu endeared himself to audiences across the globe through his memorable performances.

According to reports from sources close to the actor, Mr Ibu breathed his last breath at Evercare Hospital today Saturday, March 2, 2024, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades.

Fans have flooded social media platforms with messages of condolence, sharing fond memories of the late actor’s iconic roles and unforgettable moments on screen.

Mr Ibu’s health struggles became public knowledge in October 2023 when he began battling a serious illness that eventually led to the amputation of one of his legs. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and facing numerous challenges, the actor remained strong, with updates from his family in November suggesting signs of recovery.

Twin Mourning

Tragically, Mr Ibu’s passing comes less than 24 hours after the demise of another Nollywood veteran, Quadri Oyebamiji, known to many as Sisi Quadri. The back-to-back losses have left the industry shaken, highlighting the fragility of life and the impact of these iconic figures on the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Throughout his career, Mr Ibu faced adversity both on and off the screen. In 2019, he made headlines when he alleged that his domestic workers were paid to poison him due to jealousy over his success. This wasn’t the first time he claimed to have been targeted, as he had previously spoken out about two other alleged poisoning incidents in May 2022.

In a poignant interview, Mr Ibu reflected on his near-death experiences, revealing that he had come close to crossing over to “the other side” but was brought back to life by divine intervention. Despite the challenges he faced, the actor remained steadfast in his determination to overcome adversity and continue entertaining audiences with his unique brand of comedy.

As news of Mr Ibu’s passing spread, tributes began pouring in from fans and colleagues alike, with many lighting candles in his memory. While his physical presence may be gone, his laughter and legacy will live on, ensuring that Mr Ibu’s indelible mark on Nollywood remains etched in the hearts of millions for years to come.
