Spotify has once again embraced the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance user experience. Its latest venture, “AI playlists,” now in beta, offers a new way for users to create personalized playlists through written prompts.
The feature would initially become available on Android and iOS devices in the UK and Australia.
Unlike traditional playlist creation based solely on genres or timeframes, Spotify’s AI enables users to generate playlists in response to diverse prompts.
For instance, users can request playlists for specific scenarios like “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.” These prompts can encompass a wide array of topics, from places and animals to activities, movie characters, colors, or emojis.
Spotify emphasized that the most compelling playlists result from prompts that blend various elements such as genres, moods, artists, and decades.
Moreover, Spotify also leverages its understanding of users’ tastes to customize the playlists it makes with the feature.
After the playlist is generated, users can then use the AI to revise and refine the result by issuing commands like “less upbeat” or “more pop,” for example. Users can also swipe left on any songs to remove them from the playlist.

AI Curated Playlist
Regarding the technology, Spotify said it’s using large language models (LLMs) to understand the user’s intent. Then uses its personalization technology — the information it has about the listener’s history and preferences — to fulfill the prompt and create a personalized AI-generated playlist for the user.
This data enables Spotify to tailor the playlist creation process to each user’s unique tastes, ensuring a personalized and satisfying experience.
To power these AI and machine learning experiences, Spotify employs a variety of third-party tools, enhancing the robustness and efficiency of its algorithms.
News of Spotify’s venture into AI playlists surfaced in October 2023 when reverse engineers Chris Messina and Alessandro Paluzzi shared screenshots of code from Spotify’s app referencing AI-generated playlists “based on your prompts.”
Spotify at the time declined to comment on the finding, saying it would not offer a statement on possible new features. However, in December 2023, the company officially acknowledged that it was indeed experimenting with AI-driven playlist creation. This confirmation came after a TikTok video showcasing the feature garnered attention, with the user referring to it as “Spotify’s ChatGPT.”
If a listener can’t think of any prompts to try, Spotify offers prompt suggestions to help people get started, like “get focused at work with instrumental electronica, fill in the silence with background café music, get pumped up with fun, upbeat, and positive songs or explore a niche genre like Witch House” and many others.
Spotify said it implemented guardrails around its AI technology to prevent it from responding to offensive prompts or those centered on current events or specific brands.
Spotify has been actively investing in AI technology to enhance its streaming service for several months. For instance, last year, the company introduced AI DJ, which expanded globally.
This feature utilizes a combination of Sonantic and OpenAI technology to simulate the voice of Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan. Through AI DJ, personalized song selections are introduced to the user.
Furthermore, Spotify has expressed its commitment to AI innovation, with CEO Daniel Ek hinting at various potential applications. These include podcast summarization, the creation of AI-generated audio ads, and exploring AI technology to replicate podcast hosts’ voices for host-read ads.
