Akufo-Addo Reiterates Government’s Commitment to Bilingualism in Ghana

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting bilingualism in Ghana during the 60th anniversary celebration of Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, and other notable dignitaries, such as Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education, Jules Armand Aniambossou, French ambassador to Ghana, and Anna Bossman, Ghanaian ambassador to France, graced the event, which had as its theme “Proud Past, Bright Future: Reflecting on 60 Years of Lycee Excellence.”

“Education is the cornerstone of our nation’s future, and it is our solemn duty to ensure that every child in Ghana has access to quality education. It is through education that we empower our youth, unlock their potential, and pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. As we celebrate Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert’s 60th anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to providing all children with the tools they need to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.”

President Akufo-Addo also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen international relationships with French-speaking countries and individuals, such as former French President Jacques Chirac, to support the bilingual education initiative.

President Akufo Addo further encouraged students to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them, emphasizing the importance of education in unlocking their full potential and achieving their dreams.

“Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert has been instrumental in shaping the intellectual landscape of our nation. For 60 years, it has stood as a beacon of academic rigor and cultural exchange, fostering a spirit of collaboration and understanding among students from diverse backgrounds.”

LFIA’s Impact on Franco-Ghanaian relations

Established in 1963 by the Association of Parents and Schools, the Lycée Français International Accra (LFIA) was founded to provide the French curriculum to both Ghanaian and foreign students.

Over the years, LFIA has experienced steady growth and has been located in East Legon since 2000. During this time, the school has doubled its student population from 300 to over 700, welcoming more than thirty nationalities ranging from kindergarten to secondary high school.

As a member of the AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad), a globally recognized network of French schools, LFIA is renowned for its exceptional academic teaching and international environment, adhering to the French curriculum and international best practices.

The French ambassador to Ghana, Jules Armand Aniambossou, commended the school’s contribution to promoting Franco-Ghanaian relations and advancing the French language and culture.

This recognition underscores the significant role those educational institutions, such as Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert, play in fostering bilateral ties between France and Ghana. The school’s efforts align with broader initiatives aimed at strengthening cultural, linguistic, economic, and political relations between the two countries.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to enhance Ghana’s integration into the West African region and the Francophonie, as well as to support the development of quality educational resources for the teaching of French in Ghana.

Also speaking at the event, the board chair, Jean-Louis Feghali, reflected on the school’s journey and its role in shaping future generations. “As we celebrate this significant milestone, we pay tribute to the visionaries who laid the foundation of this institution and the countless students and educators who have contributed to its legacy of excellence.”

The anniversary celebration featured various cultural performances, alumni reunions, and exhibitions showcasing the school’s rich history and achievements.
