The former Special Prosecutor of the Republic of Ghana, Martin A. B. K. Amidu, has vehemently denied authorship of the petition seeking the removal of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.

Mr Amidu in a long article, condemned what he describes as a coordinated effort by the opposition National Democratic Congress and some media organisations to tarnish his reputation in the court of public opinion without substantiated evidence.

The former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills’s administration, strongly asserted that all media organisations, which reported that he authored the said petition have  failed to provide any documentary evidence of the petition bearing his signature.

He emphasized that such omission undermines the credibility of the allegations and constitutes a trial by media based on hearsay.

“I have learnt to live with the McCarthyism of Kissi Agyebeng and his executioners at Joy FM.

“What has really baffled me, and which is what I have been trying to understand is the reason why John Dramani Mahama who is the leader and flagbearer of the National  Democratic Congress (NDC) has unleashed his NDC attack dogs such as Alhassan Suhuyini,  Sammy Gyamfi, and to crown it all the Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah, on me since 17 May 2024 based on hearsay evidence of a petition I am alleged to have submitted to the President on 30 April 2024 for the removal of the Special Prosecutor”.

Critique of the Media and NDC Involvement

In a scathing critique against the opposition party and some media organizations, Mr Amidu expressed disappointment at the NDC’s involvement in what he perceives as a vendetta-driven campaign by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng and his associates’ media organizations against him.

He posited that the National Democratic Congress’s aggressive stance on the perceived petition led by leading officials of the party including its National Chairman, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah is based on unverified information.

“I cannot understand why the NDC will collaborate with Kissi Agyebeng’s preferred rented media house and his chief executioner, Sampson Lardy Anyenini, to make allegations against me without publishing the alleged petition on which the allegations are based to provide me the opportunity to confirm or deny my signature and rebut or admit the accusations”.

Touching on the authenticity of the petition, Mr Amidu raised several points to challenge the authenticity of the letter purportedly written by the Chief Justice demanding a response from the Special Prosecutor on the said petition attributed to him, which is central to the allegations.

He stated that the said petition lacks signature verification, adding that he is not familiar with the Chief Justice’s signature, making it impossible to confirm the document’s validity.

Mr Amidu also asserted that the said letter by the Chief Justice lacks a reference number, arguing that every official document requires reference numbers to prevent forgery and that the said letter in question lacks such a crucial element.

Furthermore, Mr Amidu, touting his educational background from Tamale Commercial Institute, the first commercial institute in Northern Ghana, expressed doubt at the Chief Justice writing and signing a document in which she will refer to herself as “the Honourable Chief Justice”, underscoring the improbability of the Chief Justice referring to herself as “the Honourable Chief Justice” in an official document.

“Fourthly, I do not think that the Chief Justice would have written and signed the document attributed to her and have it published in the media or leaked to the media. Fifth, the alleged document was addressed to only Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, whose media house, Joy FM, broke the supposed news at 6:00 am on 17 May 2024 when the Chief Justice’s document was dated the previous day, 16 May 2024.

“Sixth, I cannot fathom that the Chief Justice if she is the author of the document attributed to her gave the addressee a fiat to source the document to Joy FM”.

In addition, Mr Amidu criticized the failure of the National Democratic Congress and media organizations to publish the letter from the Presidency to the Chief Justice or the alleged petition for purposes of authentication to enable a reasoned response from him following the attribution of the petition to him.

He also dismissed the possibility that he would ever refer to the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng as “Honourable,” as allegedly stated in the said petition attributing to him [Martin Amidu].

In a fervent call for accountability and transparency, the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu called on media organizations that attributed the petition to him, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, and the NDC to produce the purported petition for public scrutiny.

He emphasized the importance of transparency to authenticate the document and allow him to respond adequately, urging the media and political actors to uphold the principles of justice and evidence-based reporting, rather than engaging in what he terms “McCarthyism”.

Mr Amidu also reaffirmed his commitment to defending the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and to continue to advocate against the manipulation of public opinion through unverified accusations.

He called on the general public to desist from such practices, which he believes threaten the integrity of the legal and democratic processes in Ghana.

In his closing remarks, Mr Amidu resolutely underscored his commitment to continue fighting corruption and defending citizens’ rights, even if it means standing alone.

He condemned the profit-driven motives of media houses and NGOs that exploit legal issues for personal gain, asserting his determination to uphold justice and constitutional values.
