Inauguration of Transit Shelter for Human Trafficking Victims in Aflao

Hon. Dakoa Newman, Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection

In a significant move aimed at bolstering efforts against human trafficking, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) of Ghana, in partnership with Expertise France, has received support from the European Union to inaugurate and commission a transit shelter for victims of human trafficking in Aflao, within the Volta Region.

This development marked a pivotal moment in the regional project dedicated to combating human trafficking across the Gulf of Guinea states, with Ghana playing a central role. The newly inaugurated transit shelter is designed to significantly enhance the identification, protection, and care of individuals who have fallen victim to human trafficking. It represents a critical infrastructure in the broader strategy to rescue and rehabilitate victims, ensuring they receive the necessary support to recover from their traumatic experiences.

“Rescuing victims is not just about saving them from immediate harm; it’s about restoring their hope and giving them a future. As of 2023, a total of 1,089 victims were rescued, including 577 boys, 97 girls, 160 women, and 255 men.”

Minister Newman expressed deep gratitude to the European Union, Expertise France, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful implementation of the project. She highlighted the collaborative effort and commitment of various organizations in addressing the complex issue of human trafficking.

The Chief Director for the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, took the opportunity to urge security officials, particularly those in Aflao, to remain vigilant. She called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals suspected of being involved in human trafficking. “Our security personnel play a pivotal role in this fight. Their vigilance and commitment are essential to disrupting trafficking networks and ensuring justice for the victims,” Dr. Zakariah said.

Representing the European Union Delegation to Ghana, Madam Anna Lixi, Head of the Governance and Security Sector, reiterated the EU’s strong stance against human trafficking. She described it as a grave violation of human rights that strips individuals of their freedom, dignity, and future.

Madam Lixi expressed concern about the prevalence of human trafficking along the Gulf of Guinea and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to partnering with the Ghanaian government and other stakeholders in combating this menace.

“Human trafficking is a modern form of slavery that we must all work together to eradicate. The European Union stands ready to continue supporting Ghana in this crucial fight,” Madam Anna Lixi emphasized.

Additionally, Alessandro Rabbiosi, Project Director at Expertise France, highlighted the significance of the transit shelter’s inauguration. He noted that the facility represents a critical milestone in the region’s efforts to support human trafficking survivors. “This shelter will serve as a sanctuary for survivors, providing them with comprehensive support to rebuild their lives, reclaim their strength, and restore their sense of self,” Rabbiosi added.

The inauguration of the transit shelter in Aflao signifies a significant step forward in Ghana’s fight against human trafficking. It demonstrates the country’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring their reintegration into society. The shelter not only provides immediate relief and safety to victims but also offers long-term support essential for their recovery and empowerment.

Furthermore, the collaborative effort involving the MoGCSP, Expertise France, and the European Union showcases the importance of international cooperation in addressing global issues such as human trafficking. It sets a precedent for other regions and countries facing similar challenges, emphasizing that a united approach can lead to substantial progress.

The establishment of the shelter is expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of rescue operations, providing a structured environment where victims can receive the necessary care and support. This initiative will likely encourage more victims to come forward, knowing that there is a dedicated facility to support their recovery.
