Roads and Highways Minister Inspects Infrastructure Projects Across Greater Accra

Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister for Roads and Highways

Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister for Roads and Highways, alongside the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, recently undertook an extensive tour of road projects in Ga West (Amasaman), Ga East (Dome Kwabenya), and Adentan.

Their inspections, supported by officials from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, highlighted the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure across the region.

In Amasaman, the Minister, accompanied by Municipal Chief Executive Clement Wilkinson, inspected the road network spanning 3 Junction, Kwashiekuman, Ardeyman, Odumtia, Akramaman, and Ayikai Doblo. This road, managed by the Department of Feeder Roads, has been under considerable strain due to significant population growth.

“I directed the Bridge Maintenance Unit (BMU) of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to take over the project and promptly procure a contractor for its reconstruction.”

Additionally, at the Kojo Ashong bridge, the Minister directed the Bridge Maintenance Unit (BMU) of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to assess and address the weak structure urgently. The team also reviewed the progress on the Obeyeyie-Nsakina-Oduman roads, emphasizing the need for timely completion to enhance connectivity in these rapidly developing areas.

In Dome Kwabenya, Hon. Asenso-Boakye, together with Municipal Chief Executive Deborah Ampofo, inspected a newly constructed bridge linking Taifa to Ofankor. This bridge is part of a larger collaboration with the Czech Republic to build 50 bridges across the country, demonstrating Ghana’s strategic international partnerships to boost infrastructure development.

The inspection also covered the municipality’s extensive road network, which is 77% paved. Completed projects at Taifa Burkina, Kristo Asafo roads, and Nkatie Burgar were highlighted, with assurances given to residents that the contractor for the Haatso Bohye road is mobilizing to the site soon. The Dome-Kitaase Road project, a critical 23.2 km road connecting major routes, was also inspected, with improvements such as asphalt concrete pavement and enhanced drainage systems in progress.

In Adentan, the Minister, led by Municipal Chief Executive Ebenezer Doku, expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress on converting the 22km Adenta-Dodowa section of Regional Route 40 (R40) into a dual carriageway. This project aims to reduce transportation costs, shorten travel time, address flooding challenges, and improve safety for road users, marking a significant upgrade for the region’s infrastructure.

The team also inspected the 5.8km School Junction – Borteyman – Motorway project, which is 98% complete and scheduled to be fully operational by July. This project features a dual-lane main road, service lanes, walkways, cycling lanes, traffic signals, streetlights, and public transport facilities. These enhancements are expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve safety for residents of Ashale Botwe, School Junction, Nmai Dzorn, and Borteyman.

Hon. Asenso-Boakye commended the contractor, Messrs Oswal Investment Limited, for their excellent work, reflecting the government’s commitment to empowering Ghanaian-owned businesses. The successful completion of these projects is poised to have far-reaching implications for the country, enhancing economic activities by improving connectivity and reducing transportation costs.

Advancements and Future Plans

The inspected projects underscore a broader strategy to improve road infrastructure nationwide, a critical component for economic growth. Improved roads facilitate the efficient movement of goods and people, thereby boosting trade and commerce. They also enhance access to services such as healthcare and education, contributing to overall social development.

“The project aims to replace existing dilapidated and narrow bridges leading to district capitals, thereby enhancing critical access to some communities and major towns, improving connectivity, boosting local economies, and enhancing the living conditions of residents.”

Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister for Roads and Highways

Moreover, the collaboration with international partners, like the Czech Republic, and the empowerment of local contractors highlight Ghana’s integrated approach to infrastructure development. These initiatives not only build local capacity but also ensure the sustainability and maintenance of the projects.

The inspection tour by Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye and his team reaffirms the government’s dedication to infrastructure development as a cornerstone of national progress. These projects, once completed, will significantly impact the Greater Accra region, improving the quality of life for residents and setting a precedent for future developments across the country.
