Fifi Kwetey Decries Alarming Corruption and Economic Hardship

Honourable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) General Secretary, Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has decried the alarming level of corruption and economic hardship under the ruling New Patriotic Party administration led by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The chief scribe of the opposition party, in touting the significance of the June 4th Revolution, which was led by Flight Lieutenant Jerry Joh Rawlings, the former Head of State of the country bemoaned the declining level of probity and accountability under the current administration.

Mr Kwetey particularly lamented the resurgence of the very issues that the June 4th uprising sought to eliminate, pointing to rampant corruption, economic mismanagement, and social injustice.

“Today, June 4th, resonates deeply within the hearts of every member of our great party and the entire nation of Ghana. This day commemorates the courageous uprising led by Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, which decisively redirected our country’s course towards justice, probity, accountability, and people-powered governance.

“Tragically, the very scourges June 4th aimed to eradicate are now more rampant under the current administration of Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia”.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC General Secretary

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress thus issued a fervent call to action against the perceived prevailing socio-economic challenges the country is facing under the New Patriotic Party administration.

He highlighted the pervasive corruption perpetuated by members and officials of the ruling New Patriotic Party administration, accusing the current administration of demonstrating a blatant disregard for the struggling masses.

Reclaiming the Promise of the Nation

Reflecting on the current socio-economic climate in the country, the former Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency in the Volta Region emphasized how the Ghanaian people are enduring escalating economic hardships, pervasive social injustices, and a glaring absence of accountability.

Mr Kwetey thus underscored the urgent need for change, thereby calling for a collective reawakening among Ghanaians to the values championed by former President Jerry John Rawlings.

“As we confront the challenges of today, let the values championed by Rawlings fuel our desire for change and guide our actions. It is our time to demand more, to expect more, and to achieve more for Ghana”.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC General Secretary

He emphasized the need for all Ghanaians to commit to the principles of justice, accountability, and people-centered governance, adding that every Ghanaian owe it to his or herself and to future generations to reclaim the promise of the country.

This, Mr Kwetey asserted would ensure that governance is once again wielded as a tool for the people, and by the people.

In his concluding remarks, Mr Kwetey paid homage to the enduring spirit of the June 4th Revolution, the resilience of the National Democratic Congress, and the hope for a better Ghana.

He strongly urged Ghanaians to channel the revolutionary spirit of the June 4th Revolution to address the pressing issues confronting the country under the New Patriotic Party administration.

In another remark, the Lead Covener for the FixTheCountry Movement, Mawuse Oliver Barker-Vormawor expressed disappointment over the failure of the country to consolidate the gains made by the June 4 Revolution.

The avid activist and advocate for constitutional reforms in the country, while exalting the leadership of the leaders of the June 4 uprising, vehemently criticized the failure of the country’s Fourth Republican democracy to live up to its expectations.

“Today is June 4th.  It has been 45 years since the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council led by some 20-something-year-olds, took over the reins of government.

“The 3 months they stayed in power has been the most uncorrupt, and effective Government Ghana has ever seen.   They weren’t perfect people, but they were a perfect reminder that gluttony begets violent ends”.

Mawuse Oliver Barker-Vormawor

Mr Barker-Vormawor thus underscored the need for the country to undertake urgent governance and constitutional reforms to avert the event of the June 4 Revolution in the near future.

The June 4 Revolution in Ghana occurred in 1979, led by the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings.

It was a military uprising against perceived corruption and economic mismanagement under the ruling Supreme Military Council.

The coup resulted in the execution of former leaders and initiated a period of political reform, culminating in the transition to the country’s Third Republic with a civilian government headed by Dr Hilla Liman later that same year.
