Hon. Maxwell Lukutor, the South Tongu NDC Parliamentary Candidate, has voiced serious concerns about the recent actions and decisions of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

In a recent statement, Hon. Lukutor described the EC’s conduct as troubling, raising significant questions about the credibility and integrity of the electoral process. Lukutor criticized the EC’s lack of consistency, indecisiveness, and apparent confusion in handling electoral affairs. He highlighted that these issues have eroded public trust in the institution.

“The Electoral Commission’s behavior, resembling a pendulum swinging back and forth, has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and doubt among the populace.”

The NDC Parliamentary candidate pointed out arbitrary changes in decisions and figures, and the absence of transparency in the EC’s actions. Hon. Lukutor emphasized that these practices disregard established processes such as engaging with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), which undermines the democratic principles that underpin Ghana’s electoral system. “These indeed have far-reaching consequences on our democratic experiment,” he added.

Hon. Maxwell Lukutor again stressed the importance of the Electoral Commission’s role as the custodian of free and fair elections. He questioned the EC’s recent actions and their impact on the Commission’s ability to fulfill this crucial role effectively.

“The inconsistencies and lack of clarity in its decisions only serve to fuel suspicions of bias and manipulation, further eroding public confidence in the electoral process.”

Emphasizing the broader implications, Hon. Lukutor stated that the EC’s posturing poses a significant threat to national security. He underscored the necessity of a credible and transparent electoral process for maintaining peace and stability in Ghana.

“Any perception of electoral malpractice or manipulation can sow seeds of discord and potentially lead to conflict, endangering the peace and security of our nation,” Hon. Lukutor cautioned.

Hon. Maxwell Lukutor further urged the Electoral Commission to reflect on its recent actions and decisions, advocating for transparency, consistency, and inclusivity in its operations. He called on the EC to engage with all relevant stakeholders, including political parties through IPAC, to ensure decisions are made in a consultative and transparent manner that inspires public confidence.

“The Electoral Commission must take immediate steps to address the concerns raised about its credibility and conduct. The future of our democracy and the peace and stability of our nation depend on the integrity of our electoral processes.”

The South Tongu NDC Parliamentary Candidate called on the EC to act with urgency to restore trust in the electoral system for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the EC for its recent directive barring political parties from monitoring the ongoing transfer of votes. Mahama argued that this decision violates a prior agreement made with political parties during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting. He accused the EC of aiding the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in its alleged attempts to manipulate the electoral process, suggesting that the Commission’s actions indicate an intent to assist the NPP in securing victory in the 2024 general elections

Furthermore, the NDC has previously criticized the EC for its decision to require voters to present a National Identification Card (GhanaCard) to register to vote in the 2024 elections. The NDC argued that this requirement could potentially discourage eligible voters, especially considering that the GhanaCard has not been universally issued.

The concerns raised by Hon. Maxwell Lukutor highlight the critical need for the Electoral Commission to uphold its responsibility in ensuring free and fair elections. As the country approaches its next electoral cycle, the integrity and transparency of the EC will be paramount in maintaining public confidence and national stability.
