The recent detention of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, has sparked significant controversy and outrage. Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, has vocally condemned the actions of the police, accusing them of acting under the influence of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Sammy Gyamfi’s statement highlighted what he describes as the baseless nature of Okunor’s detention. He refuted the police’s claims of a discrepancy in Okunor’s first name, labeling the accusation as “totally false.” To support his argument, Gyamfi has provided multiple documents bearing Okunor’s name consistently.

“Attached is a picture of the PC’s Ghana Card which bears the name ‘Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.’ Also attached is a soft copy of her campaign poster, which bears the same name ‘Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.”

“Again, attached are pictures of the license, permit, and other documents covering the gun that was found in her car, which all bear the name ‘Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor’, save that on the license the last letter ‘o’ of her middle name ‘Koryoo’ was omitted by the police officer who filled it.”

The detention has been characterized by Gyamfi as a politically motivated action orchestrated by the NPP-controlled police force. He criticizes the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare, accusing them of abandoning their impartiality in favor of partisan interests.

Gyamfi’s statement further underscored the perceived double standards in the treatment of political figures based on their party affiliations. He described the detention as an attempt to intimidate and oppress the NDC and its members, a strategy he vows will not succeed.

Context and Implications

Okunor’s arrest revolves around the possession of a firearm, which she had legally registered for her protection. Gyamfi emphasized that she has not used the gun against anyone, questioning the rationale behind her detention. He drew a stark comparison with the case of Hawa Koomson, an NPP member, who fired a gun at a voter registration center but faced no similar repercussions.

“This same Hawa Koomson has threatened Naa Koryoo at gunpoint on four (4) different occasions, according to her lawyers. This is why she was compelled to buy and register a gun in her name for her protection.”

The incident has ignited a fierce debate on social media and other platforms, with many expressing solidarities with Okunor and condemning the police’s actions. NDC supporters have been vocal in their demands for her immediate release, organizing protests and mobilizing public opinion.

The NPP, on the other hand, has largely remained silent on the issue, although some members have defended the police, arguing that the law should take its course irrespective of political affiliations.

This incident is symptomatic of the deep-seated political tensions in Ghana. The use of state institutions, such as the police, in political conflicts raises concerns about the erosion of democratic norms and the rule of law. It also highlights the vulnerabilities faced by political candidates, especially women, in an environment where threats and violence are not uncommon.

The treatment of Okunor is likely to have broader implications for the upcoming elections. It has the potential to galvanize the NDC’s base, drawing attention to issues of fairness, justice, and the impartiality of state institutions. Conversely, it may also harden the resolve of the NPP, leading to an even more polarized political climate.

The detention of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor has become a flashpoint in Ghana’s political landscape. Sammy Gyamfi’s strong condemnation of the police’s actions reflects broader concerns about political interference and the use of state power to intimidate opposition figures.

As the situation unfolds, the demands for Okunor’s release continue, with the NDC pledging to resist what they see as unjust and oppressive actions against their candidates. The outcome of this incident will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the political dynamics in Awutu Senya East and beyond.
