FDA Unites Stakeholders to Protect Ghana’s Food Safety

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has taken decisive action to protect Ghana’s delicate land and water resources in a bid to uphold national food safety standards.

This initiative underscores the necessity of preserving the safety and quality of national food sources through a collaborative approach aimed at safeguarding the essential environments that produce high-quality food for the populace.

Madam Francisca Obeng, the Central Regional Head of the FDA, emphasized the cultural and unifying role of food in Ghanaian society. “Food plays a pivotal role in our cultural identity, fostering a sense of unity among us,” she stated during a public awareness campaign on food safety held in Cape Coast.

Misunderstanding “Expertise” in Ghana’s Public Policy Debates

“Imagine if the presence of artificial colors, dyes, formalin, and other harmful substances in our food undermine our unity? How can one claim to love their neighbor whilst serving or selling them food riddled with harmful substances?”

Madam Francisca Obeng, Central Regional Head of the FDA

Mrs. Obeng called for collective action to ensure food safety, urging stakeholders to prioritize the production and preparation of food in clean and safe conditions to prevent adverse effects on people’s health. She emphasized the need for high-quality food production, stating, “Let us join forces to produce high-quality foods and look out for one another, as our food choices directly impact our overall well-being.”

The public awareness campaign was part of a celebration, which aimed to highlight the significant correlation between current food production practices and the long-term well-being of individuals, animals, and the environment.

Mrs. Obeng stressed that food safety should be a top priority for everyone, as it is a fundamental necessity for survival. She pointed out that ensuring food safety is a collaborative effort that no single food producer can achieve alone. Therefore, it is imperative for governments, food producers, business operators, and consumers to work together to ensure the safety and quality of the food supply chain from farm to table.

“Our lives are significantly influenced by what we consume. This implies that the food we ingest can either nourish us or pose a risk to our health.”

Madam Francisca Obeng, Central Regional Head of the FDA

Mrs. Obeng also highlighted the potential for global trade to propagate foodborne diseases across borders, necessitating international cooperation to ensure food safety. Contagious diseases and illnesses transmitted through food can have far-reaching consequences, making it crucial for countries to collaborate on food safety measures.

Despite these challenges, Madam Obeng affirmed that the FDA remains dedicated to safeguarding consumers by addressing the issue of unsafe foods both domestically and internationally. Efforts are being made to enhance food safety nationwide, including raising awareness about food safety protocols in various establishments and stressing the significance of permits for street food vendors.

The FDA’s initiative to mobilize all stakeholders in protecting Ghana’s land and water resources underscores the critical importance of food safety for the nation’s health and unity. By fostering a collaborative approach, the Authority aims to ensure that high-quality food is produced and consumed, benefiting the well-being of all Ghanaians. As World Food Safety Day reminds us, the safety and quality of our food are essential for a prosperous and healthy future.
