The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission have triumphantly announced that the 2024 Green Ghana Day goals have been significantly surpassed, with an extraordinary 13,875,286 seedlings distributed across the nation.

This monumental achievement was disclosed by the Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Mr. John Allotey, during a post-event press briefing held at the Forestry Commission Head Office in Accra. During his presentation, Mr. Allotey provided a detailed analysis of the provisional seedling distribution results, showcasing the remarkable success of the initiative. Notably, the Ashanti Region emerged as a standout performer, exceeding its target by an astounding 199%. Initially tasked with distributing 2,100,000 seedlings, the region managed to distribute a staggering 4,170,552 seedlings.

“The commitment and enthusiasm displayed by the Ashanti Region are truly commendable. Their efforts highlight the community’s dedication to environmental conservation and set a sterling example for the rest of the country.”

However, Mr. Allotey also acknowledged that the two regions encountered challenges in meeting their targets. He emphasized the Forestry Commission’s unwavering commitment to supporting these regions in achieving their goals, ensuring that no part of the nation is left behind in this crucial environmental endeavor.

“We are determined to provide the necessary support and resources to the regions that face difficulties. Our goal is to ensure that every region contributes meaningfully to our national reforestation efforts.”

Mr. Allotey extended heartfelt appreciation to several leading private plantation companies and religious organizations for their substantial contributions to the success of Green Ghana Day 2024. He specifically lauded the efforts of the Church of Pentecost, Presbyterian Church, Catholic Church, Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), and Methodist Church, identifying them as the top five contributing churches.

“The support from our religious communities has been phenomenal,” Mr. Allotey noted. “Their active participation has played a pivotal role in surpassing our goals and fostering a culture of environmental consciousness among their congregations.”

He also recognized the significant contributions of key private sector entities, including Ecoplanet Bamboo West Africa, Messrs Evans Sawmills Ltd, and Miro Forestry Ghana Ltd. These companies have been instrumental in driving the success of the initiative, providing expertise, resources, and unwavering commitment to reforestation efforts.

Furthermore, Mr. Allotey commended the Muslim community, with special mention of the Chief Imam, for their invaluable support and participation in the Green Ghana initiative. The inclusivity and unity demonstrated by diverse religious and community groups have been a cornerstone of the project’s success.

Despite the impressive number of seedlings already distributed and planted, Mr. Allotey revealed that more seedlings are still available at various pick-up centers nationwide. He encouraged all interested individuals, organizations, and communities to visit their nearest Forestry Commission office to obtain seedlings for planting.

“Our work does not end here. We have a continuous commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian has the opportunity to participate in this noble cause. I urge everyone to take advantage of the available seedlings and contribute to the greening of our nation.”

Mr. John Allotey, Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission

The success of Green Ghana Day 2024 marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s reforestation efforts and underscores the country’s dedication to combating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable land use practices. The initiative has galvanized nationwide participation, bringing together government agencies, private sector entities, religious organizations, and community groups in a unified effort to enhance the country’s green cover.

As the nation celebrates this achievement, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission reaffirm their commitment to sustaining and expanding these efforts in the years to come. The remarkable success of Green Ghana Day 2024 serves as an inspiring example of what can be accomplished through collective action and shared responsibility.

The surpassing of the Green Ghana Day 2024 goals is a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement in addressing environmental challenges. The initiative has not only contributed to reforestation but also fostered a sense of national pride and unity, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future for Ghana.
