Call For Local Leadership Elections Intensifies

Nana Obiri Boahen

Nana Obiri Boahen

Nana Obiri Boahen, former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), believes that electing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) is essential to address the issue of underdevelopment at the local level and foster meaningful progress across the country.

According to Nana Obiri Boahen, electing MMDCEs would not only fortify the local government structure but also empower local residents with a greater say in decision-making, leading to more effective and rapid development outcomes in their communities.

Nana Boahen expressed his unwavering confidence in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and hoped that, if elected, his government would prioritize and implement the election of MMDCEs, bringing the concept to fruition in Ghana.

“I will highly be disappointed if Dr. Bawumia’s government fails to make this vision a reality in the first term of office… If the masses are given the chance to elect them, the MMDCES will be more accountable and they will not have the chance to take them for granted and do what they like as some are doing at the local levels”.

Furthermore, Nana Boahen lamented that some Ghanaians and self-serving politicians are politicizing matters of national development for their own gain, injecting partisan interests into issues that demand a collective and patriotic approach, thereby hindering progress.

He warned that if political leaders persist in prioritizing personal interests over the nation’s well-being, Ghana’s development will remain stagnant and oscillate between progress and regression, hindering the country’s forward momentum.

He also cautioned that if this self-serving behavior persists, the average Ghanaian will continue to suffer the consequences, bearing the brunt of stalled development, and ultimately, a diminished quality of life.

Nana Boahen expressed his concern that despite Ghana’s significant progress in democratic governance since 1992, the country’s development trajectory remains sluggish, with the nation still grappling with fundamental challenges, a situation he finds deeply troubling and incongruous with the country’s democratic gains.

“Until we allow national interest to override or supersede our personal or ambitious gains we can’t develop as anticipated.” – Nana Obiri Boahen

He also acknowledged that individuals have the freedom to choose their preferred political party, implying that Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy is a worthy consideration for many.

He emphasized that Ghanaians need to foster a spirit of unity, put aside their differences, and coalesce around Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, as his vision for the country is truly remarkable and deserves collective support to materialize into tangible progress for the nation.

He emphasized that Ghana requires a leader with a clear vision, credibility, and integrity, who can unite the nation across religious lines, and that Dr. Bawumia, the Vice President, is exemplifying this leadership style, working tirelessly to bridge the divide and bringing people together, regardless of their religious affiliations.

“For the purposes of development, let’s try and bury our political inclinations and orientations for the next NPP government of Dr. Bawumia to bring the development of the nation to the next level”.

Nana Obiri Boahen

As such, he made a passionate appeal to all Ghanaians to put aside their differences and come together in a spirit of unity and solidarity, to drive development, ensure political stability, and build a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.

Nana Obiri Boahen admonished all citizens to approach the upcoming December elections with a sense of calmness, trust, and civic responsibility, urging them to prioritize peace and stability over partisan interests and to exercise their franchise in a manner that reflects the country’s democratic values.
