Richard Ahiagba, National Communications Director- NPP

Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s National Communications Director, has criticized the Ghana Police Service for their inaction regarding the alleged assault on a Christian Service University student by individuals linked to the National Democratic Congress, urging the police to take prompt action to address the situation.

Mr. Ahiagbah stressed that Nana Boakye’s heckling of former President John Dramani Mahama during his presentation at CSU was a legitimate exercise of free speech and did not warrant the alleged assault, emphasizing that the victim had done nothing wrong by expressing his opinions.

“I visited Nana Boakye, a student at Christian Service University College, who was brutally assaulted by NDC thugs during former President Mahama’s speech when he retorted, ‘Mahama will lose, in response to an attack on Dr. Bawumia. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the gentleman disagreeing with former President Mahama”.

Richard Ahiagbah

Richard Ahiagbah further condemned the Ashanti NDC’s attempts to trivialize the incident, emphasizing that no citizen should face such brazen intimidation and violence for merely exercising their fundamental right to free speech.

He stressed that such attempts to downplay the incident are unacceptable and undermine the principles of democracy and human rights.

Mr. Ahiagbah expressed his deep concern and outrage that the police have failed to take prompt action to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the brutal assault on Nana Boakye, despite the gravity of the incident, and stressed that this inaction undermines the rule of law and the citizens’ trust in the justice system.

He called on the police to take immediate and decisive action, thoroughly investigate the incident, and ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions, bringing them to justice and upholding the law.

Christian Service University Investigates Student Assault

Christian Service University announced that it is taking comprehensive measures to investigate and address the alleged assault on one of its students, which occurred during a public lecture delivered by former President John Dramani Mahama, ensuring the well-being and safety of its students.

According to a statement released by the University, the Dean of Students, acting on behalf of the management, has established contact with the affected student, Nana Boakye, to offer the necessary counseling and support to address their physical and emotional well-being.

The university’s statement conceded that while the public lecture was largely successful, the isolated incident of alleged assault was unfortunate and regrettable, and the institution is taking steps to address it.

“As an academic institution, we believe in multiparty democracy as the bedrock for sustainable development and security in Ghana. We consistently maintain neutrality in all our dealings with the established political order of the day”.

The statement also proudly noted the University’s long history of hosting successful public lectures, featuring esteemed guest speakers, showcasing its commitment to intellectual discourse and community engagement, and emphasizing that the recent incident was an isolated departure from this tradition of respectful dialogue.

The statement further elaborated that, as part of the University’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, the planning committee has organized a series of three public lectures.

In addition to the lecture delivered by former President John Dramani Mahama, the upcoming lectures will feature the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and a distinguished alumnus of the University.

The lectures aim to facilitate a high-level dialogue with esteemed political leaders, exploring cutting-edge solutions to strengthen Ghana’s democratic foundations, stimulate economic growth, and promote sustainable development, thereby contributing to a brighter future for the nation.
