STEM Education In Ghana

The office of the Youth MP, under the auspices of the United Nations Youth Association Ghana, and the office of Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu, MP for Madina, have launched a five-week science practical program for over 40 schools in the area, benefiting more than 1,500 Junior High School students.

This initiative aims to enhance science education in the Madina municipality and promote hands-on learning experiences for young minds.

According to the United Nations Youth Association Ghana, the program seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical science education.

This will be achieved by fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and inspiring students to pursue careers in STEM fields, thereby nurturing a passion for innovation and discovery.

The program’s comprehensive curriculum spans various scientific disciplines, encompassing topics such as chemical reactions, corrosion, microscopic exploration, and cellular biology, providing students with a diverse and engaging learning experience.

Hon. Lovelace Bobobee Kwadzo Edzor, United Nations Youth MP for Madina, emphasized that the practical approach is designed to enhance students’ comprehension of scientific concepts and foster critical thinking skills through hands-on experience with modern equipment, thereby making learning more engaging and effective.

“The program’s success is expected to lead to improved BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination) results and increased interest in science and mathematics among students”.

Hon. Lovelace Bobobee Kwadzo Edzor

The Youth MP further stressed the significance of STEM education and its real-world implications, urging students to embrace it with enthusiasm and dedication, as it holds the key to unlocking innovative solutions and shaping their future careers.

He also stated that by providing access to quality science education, the program seeks to enhance student achievement in science subjects and bolster their prospects of succeeding in STEM fields, thereby empowering them to pursue innovative and rewarding careers.

Hon. Lovelace Bobobee Kwadzo Edzor revealed that plans are in motion to establish a state-of-the-art central laboratory in the constituency, providing a convenient and cutting-edge hub for STEM education, innovation, and scientific exploration, ultimately fostering a culture of excellence in science and technology.

Empowering Students Through Hands-on Science Education

Furthermore, Hon. Lovelace Bobobee Kwadzo Edzor called upon esteemed partners, including the United Nations and UNESCO, to lend their support to this groundbreaking initiative, sharing their valuable resources and expertise to amplify its reach and effectiveness.

He encouraged students to seize this opportunity with enthusiasm, tackling mathematics and science with renewed assurance, recognizing that they have a robust support system in place, comprising dedicated teachers, a nurturing community, and a committed government, all geared towards fostering their success.

Meanwhile, Celestine Kumadey, an instructor from MK Laboratories, elaborated that the program encompasses a diverse array of essential science practicals, featuring experiments on density, microscopic examination of cell morphology, and iodine-based tests for carbohydrate detection in food.

She emphasized that by engaging in these hands-on experiments, students will acquire a richer comprehension of scientific principles and cultivate essential critical thinking skills, enabling them to analyze complex phenomena and think innovatively.

She encouraged students to engage with the hands-on aspects of science, uncovering its beauty and everyday applications.

Jessica Sena Gomey, a beneficiary of the program, expressed her heartfelt appreciation and praised the organizers for devising an initiative that has profoundly enhanced her understanding of science.

“I’m excited to experience the practical aspects of science in detail, which isn’t always possible in every school due to limited resources like microscopes. But here, I can access modern technologies anytime, explore and learn in-depth, and excel in my exams.”

She observed that utilizing cutting-edge tools will enable her to gain a more profound and lasting understanding, making it easier to retain and recall complex concepts during exams, ultimately leading to improved academic performance.
