Joe Mettle Reveals How Allan Family Nurtured His Love for Soul Winners

Joe Mettle

Ghanaian gospel musician and songwriter, Joe Mettle has revealed that listening to the cultural troupe Allan Family, made it easy for him to join the Gospel band Soul Winners in 2008.

He recalled hearing the Allan Family playing their music behind his home when he was much younger.

“At the time, there was no demarcation of sacred and secular.”

The singer-songwriter remembered going to a few churches and enjoying their music also; Faith Evangelical, being one.

Soon, he identified making music as his divine task, the Reverb Studios founder and CEO stated.

“When I came to the full realization and understanding of why I’m drawn to it [music], I started learning, practicing, serving, and today, we’re here.”

During his leisure, Mettle disclosed he enjoyed mainly Gospel even though once in a while, he listens to Jazz music.

The “Bo Nor Ni” hitmaker noted that on a good day, he could create two or three songs.

Recognizing God has given him some of the best musicians to work with, he stated he often has to exercise a bit of control in their creative process by reminding his team of the limited singing abilities of the congregation who are his priority.

He added it is typical of him to offer suggestions for melodies with his mouth while they are created.

He revealed that “Hide Me” featuring Jonathan Nelson was one of the most complicated songs to work with his team on. Their reception, when he first taught the song, was one of confusion, he recalled.

Joe Mettle was with Soul Winners for six years, joining in 2008.

His exit came when he enrolled at Pentecost University and after, sought a solo career which has borne much fruit, evidenced by: multiple awards, including being the legendary first Gospel singer to win the Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year in 2017; and starting his record label Reverb, mentoring stars like Luigi Maclean and Enuonyam, among other things.

Much like the Allan Family, Soul Winners performed mostly with traditional instruments in the cheer fashion of the Ga people known as jama, the ultimate difference being Soul Winners was only concerned with Christian themes.

“Wala Bolo” (2009) is one of Soul Winner’s biggest hits while Joe Mettle led the group.

Joe Mettle encouraged young people to marry but seek to do it with the right intentions and in God’s way.

Although he did not explain what he meant by God’s way, he delightfully asserted “marriage is a blessing.”

“It’s an institution made by God so you need to do it the way God wants you to and you’ll enjoy it.”

Joe Mettle

Echoing a Biblical verse that says “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from God [Proverbs 18:22],” he argued against those apathetic and opposed to marriage.

Joe Mettle revealed that there’s a level of favor that is released in marriage, contending it is why people notice “an indescribable” change in those who marry.

“That favor can never be released until it’s in marriage,” he stressed.

Acknowledging many people marry for different reasons, the Gospel star admonished his audience to consider their intentions before marriage carefully.

The music executive and entrepreneur noted, contrary to popular notions in some Christian circles, physical beauty and attraction are important in choosing a spouse, additionally expressing his belief in a Psalm that God will give, a person aligned with him, the desires of their heart.

He playfully noted he had “a partner-in-crime and a gossip partner” in his wife, touting her also as “a safe space” far removed from all the noise of the world.

However, the “Give Me Oil” hitmaker warned, quoting the Bible [Proverbs 21:9], that it is better to stay single than to live with a troublesome partner.

“This is why you need to do it right and trust God for the right person,” he urged.
