Empowering Women For Ghana’s Development

Supporting women in governance for development in Ghana is essential for promoting gender equality, empowering women, and fostering inclusive development.

Ghana has made significant progress in recent years, but gender disparities persist, particularly in political representation and decision-making.

Furthermore, promoting gender equality in governance is a constitutional requirement and a human right.

Women constitute 51% of Ghana’s population, yet they are underrepresented in politics and decision-making positions.

Supporting women in governance ensures that their voices are heard and their interests are represented.

Similarly, empowering women through capacity building and confidence boosting is crucial for effective leadership.

Women face various barriers, including cultural and social norms that hinder their participation in politics. Empowering women enables them to overcome these obstacles and take on leadership roles.

More so, inclusive development is only possible when women’s needs and priorities are considered.

Women leaders prioritize healthcare, education, and social welfare, which are essential for Ghana’s development.

Their participation in governance ensures that policies address the needs of all citizens, not just a select few.

As such, women’s economic empowerment is critical for Ghana’s economic growth and prosperity.

Women’s participation in the workforce and decision-making processes can drive economic development, reduce poverty, and improve living standards.

Accordingly, Hon. Betty Krosbi-Mensah, MP for Afram-Plains North, has hailed the selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman as the NDC’s Vice-Presidential candidate, citing it as a testament to the party’s dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

“Women’s inclusion and women’s perspective in governance, especially in the legislative space, is critical for national development and cannot be discounted under any circumstance, and that calls for support to leaders who have shown the commitment.”

Hon. Betty Krosbi-Mensah

The MP pointed out that Former President Mahama and the NDC have consistently shown their willingness to empower women in governance, having chosen a female running mate twice, thereby demonstrating their dedication to gender inclusivity and equal opportunities in leadership.

Supporting Women in Politics: A Catalyst for Change

Moreover, women leaders serve as role models, inspiring other women to pursue leadership roles and challenging gender stereotypes. This helps to create a more inclusive and diverse political landscape.

More so, women leaders prioritize healthcare, reducing maternal and child mortality, and improving overall health outcomes.

They also advocate for girls’ education, improving literacy and opportunities for future generations.

Additionally, women promote social justice, addressing gender-based violence and discrimination. They ensure that policies and programs address the needs of marginalized communities.

Women also ensure good governance, promoting transparency, accountability, and effective resource management. They prioritize the needs of citizens, rather than personal interests.

Most importantly, supporting women in governance strengthens Ghana’s democracy, promoting diverse perspectives and inclusive decision-making.

This leads to more effective and sustainable development outcomes.

As such, Hon. Betty Krosbi-Mensah stressed the importance of continuing to support and empower women to advance in their political and governance leadership roles, building on the progress they have made so far.

Apart from the infrastructure developments, the MP recounted her efforts in combating child trafficking and teenage pregnancies, which were extremely high in the area, through concerted efforts and commitment to reduce them to the barest minimum.

“I have done a lot as the people’s representative and raised their standard of living over the years, but more needs to be done and that is my motivation for contesting these coming elections to continue with what is left. Every woman is seen as a mother and so voting for a woman means a lot in terms of nurturing and commitment to duty… There is an ongoing project to install solar energy for about 90 island communities scattered along the Volta Lake, to improve their economic lives as there is no electricity.”

Hon. Betty Krosbi-Mensah

The MP also shared her successes in tackling child trafficking and teenage pregnancies, which were formerly rampant in the area, and her unrelenting efforts to minimize them through sustained collaboration and dedication.

She highlighted that this reinforces the argument for increased female representation in politics to drive developmental progress.

Thus, supporting women in governance is essential for Ghana’s development as it promotes gender equality, empowers women, and fosters inclusive development.
