Trump Wins More Friends

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, left, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on the second day of the Republican National Convention on July 16, 2024.

The scene at the second day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) offered a striking tableau of political reconciliation and strategic endorsement.

Former rivals of Donald Trump, once fierce critics of his policies and demeanor, took to the stage to endorse his bid for reelection.

Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, both of whom had clashed with Trump during the Republican primary season, delivered impassioned speeches in support of the former President.

Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina Governor and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, had once warned of the chaos she believed Trump could unleash on the world stage. Yet there she stood, offering strong endorsement of his candidacy.

Her pivot from skepticism to support underscores a broader narrative within the GOP, where loyalty to the party and its leader often trumps personal differences.

“Donald Trump has my full endorsement, period,” Haley said.

Haley was the last Republican challenger standing against Trump in the Republican presidential primary.

She revealed that the former President asked her to speak about unity.

Haley said that Americans don’t need to agree with Trump all the time to vote for him in November and argued the Republican Party needs to not just be unified, but also needs to expand.

South Carolina delegate JerryRovner said it was “absolutely” important for Haley to endorse Trump, believing that it would bring in voters who are hesitant about the former president and that the party needs “100% unity” headed into the fall.

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, who had positioned himself as a more subdued alternative to Trump during his own primary campaign, also made a notable about-face.

Previously critical of Trump’s approach, DeSantis now lauded Trump’s economic policies and his stance on immigration.

In his speech at the RNC, DeSantis urged Americans to stand with Trump.

“Donald Trump, he’s been demonized. He’s been sued. He’s been prosecuted. And he nearly lost his life. We cannot let him down, and we cannot let America down,” DeSantis said.

While DeSantis often criticized Trump for failing to complete the border wall, DeSantis stated, “Our border was safer under the Trump administration.”

He added, “Our country was respected when Donald Trump was our Commander in Chief.”

He implored the crowd, “Let’s make the 45th President of the United States the 47th President of the United States.”

DeSantis dropped out of the race in January and endorsed Trump, but the two did not speak for weeks after their acrimonious primary for the nomination ended.

It was previously reported that DeSantis originally wasn’t in the program for Trump’s convention, however, he was ultimately awarded a speaking role.

Haley and DeSantis are demonstrating pragmatism and political savvy by rallying behind Trump as presenting a united front is essential to defeating Joe Biden.

In the end, Trump’s victory in winning over friends—once foes—highlights a crucial turning point for the party.

For now, the Republican Party stands united under the banner of Trump, ready to face the upcoming election as a formidable, albeit complex, coalition.

The stakes have never been higher, and this new era of Republican unity could very well determine the future of American politics.

Democratic Discord

Meanwhile, a growing faction of House Democrats, convinced President Joe Biden is too politically damaged to win in November, is calling on the Democratic National Committee to ditch plans to virtually nominate him in the coming weeks.

Democrats have been planning for weeks to conclude Biden’s nomination process before August 7, 2024, – well ahead of the convention next month.

There has been multiple sources of a draft letter calling on the party to slow down the process – a clear sign of the party’s deep worries about Biden.
