Lydia Forson Shares Fibroid Story To Raise Awareness

Lydia Forson

In an inspiring message, Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson has shared her deeply personal journey with fibroids, shedding light on a condition that affects countless women worldwide.

Forson’s story comes as part of July’s Fibroid Awareness Month, aiming to support and educate women facing similar battles.

“To the women who’ve had to live in constant pain, undergo multiple surgeries, answer questions about children, or endure speculation about pregnancy due to their appearance, or fear that they never will be pregnant; you’re not alone. I lived in pain for 10 years before I got help,” Forson began her heartfelt narrative.

Forson, known for her powerful performances on screen, revealed the physical and emotional toll that fibroids took on her life.

She expressed solidarity with women who, like her, have suffered in silence due to the pain and societal pressures surrounding the condition.

“So many women have stories they can’t share because of how painful it is, but I’m happy for the brave ones who do. You give courage to many women and educate them even more. For some of us, we were completely ignorant until our diagnosis.”

Describing her decade-long struggle, Forson recounted the severe pain she endured, often so exhausting that she was unable to move.

Her turning point came when an emergency hospital visit led to the discovery of fibroids.

“For years, I was in severe pain, sometimes so paralyzing I couldn’t move. It wasn’t until I ended up in an emergency and blanked out that I knew something was wrong. And when doctors ran the tests, they discovered I had fibroids.

“The worst part of this journey was not the surgery. Thankfully, I had great doctors who took fantastic care of me. It was the fear of the unknown; the first doctor almost gave me no hope at all, suggesting even that I go out and find anyone to have a baby with.”

However, finding the right medical team made all the difference. Forson expressed gratitude for the doctors who provided honest but reassuring guidance, helping her through the surgery and subsequent recovery.

“Today, I’m grateful that I don’t have to live in so much pain, grateful that no one else will find me on a bathroom floor too paralyzed to move. Grateful that I don’t have to be rushed into emergency and even more grateful that I’m alive to share my story when some aren’t.”

Her message concluded with a call to action for women to be proactive about their health. Forson encouraged women to undergo regular tests, ask questions about their bodies, and seek support when needed.

Actress Discloses Return of Fibroids Two Years After Surgery

Three years after undergoing invasive surgery to remove fibroids, Nigerian actress Ini Dima-Okojie announced that the fibroids have returned.

Taking to Instagram, the actress addressed her followers and fans and updated them about the challenges she’s facing and her plans moving forward.

“I want to share something important with you today. If you’ve been following me, you would probably know that before the end of 2020, I had a myomectomy, which is an evasive surgery to take out fibroids. The surgery was successful; my doctor removed every single fibroid and I healed well. It’s been 3 years since the surgery and unfortunately, the fibroids are back.”

Ini Dima-Okojie

Acknowledging the emotional toll of this setback, she admitted that the news has been hard on her, adding that she has no intentions of undergoing fresh surgery to have them removed.

“It’s very disheartening and it hasn’t been the easiest couple of months but I’m okay. I’ve come to terms with it, and I definitely don’t want to do another surgery anytime soon. This time I want to take a holistic approach towards shrinking the fibroids.”

The actress added, “I just thought it was important to share and it wasn’t easy. I remember the first time I shared my story and how many women felt seen and many people shared their stories with me.”

Ini Dima-Okojie highlighted the importance of raising awareness about fibroids, particularly among black women.

“Too many black women go through this and it wasn’t being talked about enough and it’s still not being talked about enough. I don’t even know if a remedy is being found for it. I’m going to be paying for 20 women to get their screening done; it’s very important.”
