The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in Ghana has been at the forefront of promoting democratic governance through its organization of presidential debates.

Since 2000, these debates have become a crucial aspect of Ghana’s electoral process, providing a platform for presidential candidates to engage with citizens, share their vision, and account for their past actions.

Furthermore, these debates provide a unique opportunity for citizens to hear directly from the candidates, understand their policies, and make informed decisions at the polls.

By listening to the candidates’ responses to questions on various issues, voters can assess their leadership style, vision, and ability to address the country’s challenges.

The debates encourage citizens to engage in discussions on national issues, exercise their right to vote, and demand more from their leaders by stimulating public interest in the elections.

Accordingly, the IEA has reaffirmed its advocacy for a presidential debate, emphasizing the crucial role that such debates play in fostering a healthy democracy.

According to the IEA, the debates offer a platform for candidates to share their policy proposals with the Ghanaian people and respond to their opponents’ ideas, enabling voters to make well-informed decisions at the polls.

To ensure fairness, the IEA stressed that it extends equal participation opportunities to all candidates.

“The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) takes note of the Press Statement issued on Friday, 19th July, 2024 by “The Mahama 2024 Campaign” team which was signed by the Spokesperson- Madam Joyce Bawah Mogtari. The said Press Statement was in response to the IEA’s announcement of its intention to conduct Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates for the 2024 elections”.

“While thanking Madam Mogtari for her response, the IEA reacts as follows: The IEA is on record as having initiated Presidential Debates in this country (in the year 2000), and has consistently pursued this noble public-spirited function with integrity, with the exception of 2020 where no Debates were organized because of the Covid-19 pandemic”.

As such, the IEA emphasized that, given its impartial approach, it cannot be accused of bias towards any political party, specifically the NPP, as claimed by the NDC, and maintains its neutral stance.

IEA Debates Foster Peaceful Elections And Democratic Growth

Moreover, the IEA debates contribute to peaceful elections in Ghana.

By providing a platform for candidates to engage in constructive dialogue, the debates help to reduce tensions and promote a focus on issues rather than personalities.

Likewise, the IEA debates enhance Ghana’s democratic reputation and have helped to promote Ghana’s image globally and reinforce its position as a stable democracy.

Reiterating its commitment to impartiality, the IEA pointed out that its press release on July 17, 2024, made no mention of contacting or inviting any specific political party or presidential candidate to partake in the debates, further underscoring its neutral position.

The IEA clarified that it had not previously contacted or engaged with any political party or presidential candidate before issuing its press release, and its plan was to follow up with personalized invitations to each candidate, extending an offer to participate in the debates and other related events.

“The IEA respectfully encourages all Presidential and Vice-Presidential Candidates to participate in the Debates which offers the platform to explain their policies and programs to the electorate, to win their votes”.

“The Debates contribute to enhancing Ghana’s growing democracy and should be seen as such. As it always does, the IEA will be writing to the Presidential Candidates inviting them to participate in the Debates and the other activities”.

Institute of Economic Affairs

The IEA further expressed its earnest desire for all presidential and vice-presidential candidates to join in the upcoming program, emphasizing its inclusive and participatory approach.

Thus, the presidential debates organized by the IEA in Ghana are crucial for promoting democratic governance, accountability, and informed decision-making.

As Ghana continues to consolidate its democracy, the IEA debates will remain an essential component of the country’s electoral process.
