VP Bawumia Never To Debate In Parliament- Aboagye

parliamentary debate

Parliamentary debates are a vital component of Ghana’s democratic process, playing a crucial role in shaping the country’s elections.

These debates provide a platform for lawmakers to engage in constructive discussions, scrutinize government policies, and represent their constituents’ interests.

Through parliamentary debates, citizens are able to assess the leadership qualities of their representatives, policy proposals, and party manifestos, ultimately informing their voting decisions.

Furthermore, a primary function of parliamentary debates is to hold leaders accountable for their actions and decisions.

During debates, lawmakers can pose questions, raise concerns, and challenge government policies, ensuring transparency and accountability.

This scrutiny helps to build trust in the political process and allows citizens to evaluate the performance of their leaders.

Accordingly, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign, agreed with the NDC’s call for a parliamentary debate but pointed out that the Vice President’s participation is unnecessary.

Aboagye stated that the Vice President will decline the invitation to debate the minority in parliament, as he has confidence in the strong debaters on the majority side to effectively handle the minority’s arguments.

According to Aboagye, the majority team, comprising Hon. Kweku Kwarteng, Afenyo Markin, Abena Osei Asare, and others, is well-equipped to handle the minority’s arguments with ease, freeing the Vice-President from having to engage in the debate.

“The Vice President is flattered with the idea of lining up 7 NDC MPs to debate only him. That tells a lot about how the minority perceives the Vice-President as a solid intellectual. Truly, that’s what Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is, an astute leader you can trust. Surely you need more than one person from the minority to handle”.

“While the Majority team makes easy meat of the minority debaters, the Vice-President still remains ready for the former President, H.E Mahama for the debate of records and Policies as Presidential candidates seeking the mandate of the people”.

Presidential Debates Trump Parliamentary Ones

Moreover, parliamentary debates also set the campaign agenda, identifying key issues that parties and candidates must address.

By focusing attention on pressing concerns, debates help to ensure that elections are centered on the most critical issues facing the country.

However, Dennis Miracles Aboagye asserted that although parliamentary debates are relevant, they pale in comparison to the superior importance and impact of presidential debates.

He emphasized that this year’s presidential candidates, being former Vice Presidents with one having previously held the presidency, owe it to the Ghanaian people to engage in a debate, allowing citizens to assess their distinct visions for the country’s future.

The NPP Communicator indicated that this debate is essential for Ghanaians to make an informed decision about who has the most innovative ideas to lead the nation forward.

“It is okay if the former President, H.E Mahama doesn’t want to debate. There is no gun to his head. One would have expected that, as a former president and an opposition leader for 8 years, he would be a bit more confident in his records and would have come up with solid ideas by now for the good people of Ghana”.

“This weak attempt by the minority in Parliament to shield their leader from debating and telling the good people of this country what he did when he was given the opportunity to be president and what his future plans are for the country is too much effort. If he is not ready, it’s fine but they don’t have to put up all this drama just to shield him from a debate. Too much work”.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye

Aboagye pointed out that while parliamentary debates are conducted within the framework of established rules and procedures outlined in the Standing Orders, presidential debates operate under a separate set of rules designed to facilitate in-depth discussions.

He stated that the Majority MPs are capable of addressing the Minority MPs in parliament, while Dr. Bawumia is more than equipped to engage with former President Mahama in a presidential debate.

He assured that Dr. Bawumia stands ready to meet former President John Mahama in a debate as soon as Mahama is prepared, signaling a confident willingness to engage.

“For now, Dr. Bawumia has a much more solid team of Majority MPs to handle this easy set of debaters from the minority side”. – Dennis Miracles Aboagye
