NPP Goes Grassroots For 2024 Elections

Evans Nimako

Evans Nimako, NPP’s Director of Research and Elections, revealed that the party’s electoral strategy for this year involves a grassroots approach, aiming to engage with each and every eligible voter across all polling stations.

He pointed out that most electorates will participate in the December polls, predicting that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, will accumulate the necessary votes to form a government following the election.

Nimako challenged former President John Mahama to engage in a public debate with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, if he so desires, to allow Ghanaians to witness and decide who is best suited to succeed President Akufo-Addo as the next leader of Ghana.

“In the last election, in 2020, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo garnered millions to configure as the President. Polls will be conducted but Ghanaians will make the final decision. If you check the registered voters across the country, almost 18.6 million and you look at the quantum from the Ashanti region and you working from polling station to polling station and you are a serious party and you have your strategy in place, you will be working towards figures that will enable you to win an election”.

Evans Nimako

He added that the NPP is strategically targeting to secure an overwhelming 85% of the votes in the Ashanti region, aligning with the aspiration expressed by the party’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Nimako declared that the NPP’s determination to win the election remains unwavering, and despite any obstacles, the party will continue to work diligently across the country to achieve its goal.

He indicated that the Ashanti region remains the NPP’s impregnable stronghold, and this will not change regardless of poll results, due to the party’s deep connection with the region’s grassroots.

NDC Challenges NPP’s Ashanti Region Popularity

However, the NDC countered that the NPP is refusing to acknowledge its waning popularity in the Ashanti region, contending that despite being the hometown of the NPP’s running mate, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, his accomplishments in the region are underwhelming and unimpressive.

Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, noted that the NPP’s prospects in the region are further compromised by the controversial reputation of their running mate, who has alienated supporters with his contentious comments about Kwame Nkrumah, thereby exacerbating the party’s unpopularity.

However, he observed that the NDC is making strides in the Ashanti region, gaining traction due to its dedicated efforts to strengthen connections with the local community and intensify grassroots engagement.

“The NDC has been…exposing the ills of this government. The heightened level of corruption, the level of thievery. In fact, we are yet to even start door-to-door, community-to-community to tell the people how the Akyem Mafia intends to sub-change the people Ashanti region by using the same for political experience and dump them”.

Mustapha Gbande

Gbande further forecasted that the NPP’s grip on the Ashanti region will continue to deteriorate, with its stronghold weakening even further than it has already.

He sounded a warning that the Ashanti region will not be allowed to be utilized by the NPP as a springboard to further its own interests at the expense of the country’s development and well-being.

Gbande announced that the NDC’s youth wing is set to unveil a youth manifesto next week, emphasizing that the party will make a concerted effort to win over young people nationwide, with a special focus on those in the Ashanti region.

He clarified that the NDC is not dependent on winning the entire Ashanti region, but rather aims to educate the region’s voters about the true nature of the current NPP leadership, exposing them as self-serving and detrimental to the party’s well-being.

“At the end of the day, people of the Ashanti region own a lot of business and they are feeling the mismanagement in the current government”. – Mustapha Gbande
