Victony Touches on Parent’s Acceptance of Music Career

Victony

Nigerian singer, Victony has shared that his serious dedication to music became clear to his parents only after he survived a car accident in 2021 that left him in a coma for four days.

He revealed that he did not receive pushback from his parents regarding his music because it started as a hobby.

According to his account, his family did not know that he was going to take it seriously and he did not start until he got into the university.

“I was good at school so they never bothered about it and they never thought it would distract me from my education but when I got into the university, that was when I started to take it seriously,” the ‘Risk’ singer said.

Victony explained that it was after he narrowly escaped death in a ghastly car accident in 2021 that his parents understood how far his music had gone.

“They didn’t know I was taking it seriously until after the accident. When the accident happened, a lot of people came to the hospital and they wondered how it was possible.

“They soon began to realize that I had a community that was growing already and they gave me their blessings from that point.”

Victony’s car accident left one dead, and injured three, and confirmed him to a wheelchair for a year.

He has been open about his health struggles, announcing a two-month break from music in February 2023 after undergoing his third surgery.

Sharing his ongoing health struggles, he revealed that he has undergone four surgeries and has another one scheduled after his upcoming North America tour.

Victony spoke about his recovery phase and how he manages his pain before performing on stage. “I take pain relievers before I go on stage and I still record. I thank God for his grace, it is not by power,” he said.

Victony expressed gratitude for his blessings.

“I’m still in the recovery phase but I’m still able to do this now. And I’m about to go on tour… Going in and out of the hospital. I thank God for his grace.”

Anthony Ebuka Victor, popularly known as Victony, attributed his career success to his hit song ‘Soweto.’

According to him, the global hit song changed the trajectory of his life.

“‘Soweto’ changed my life. It changed my life in the sense that I was able to travel to places I didn’t believe that I would get to in a very short time,” he said.

“The song was already successful in late 2022, and in 2023, we wanted to maintain that success so we employed Don Toliver and Rema on the remix. They’re very big names and their sounds are not far from what ‘Soweto’ sounds like.”

Victony further stated that he is currently an independent artist, having taken control of his music career.

“Soweto” is produced by ace producer Tempoe. It was released as the first single from Victony’s second extended play Outlaw.

It gained popularity on TikTok and charted across the United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands, and Switzerland.

A remix featuring Omah Lay was released before a second remix with Rema and Don Toliver was released propelling the song further.

Victony and Tempoe released the video for “Soweto” in October 2022. The video was directed by Jyde Ajala and garnered over 8 million views on YouTube within four weeks.

A second video was released for the remix. The song featured at number 15 on Rolling Stone magazine’s “Top 40 Afropop Songs of 2022”.
