Ace Broadcaster ‘The Grandmaster’ Godwin Avenorgbo Passes On

Veteran broadcaster and communications expert, Godwin Avenogbor, has passed away. 

His family from Sokpoe in the Volta Region confirmed his sudden death on Tuesday morning.

“It is with deep sorrow that the Avenogbor and allied families announce the passing of beloved Godwin Avenogbor (The Grandmaster).

“He departed peacefully, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever remain in our hearts. The family kindly asks for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

It said the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

The Grand Master, as the ‘sweet-voiced’ Godwin Avenorgbo was affectionately called by his peers and mentees alike, was last Thursday, August 15, an active part of activities at the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) 75th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

He was the Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee.

The GBC Facebook post only acknowledged that the ‘Grandmaster’ (Godwin Avenorgbo) has bowed out and wished his ‘gentle soul’ a peaceful rest, accompanied by a photograph of him in a relaxed pose.

Avenorgbo’s death marks the end of an era for many who grew up watching and listening to him, his peers, and mentees, and he will be remembered for his significant contributions to the Ghanaian media landscape.

Godwin Avenorgbo leaves behind a legacy of dedication and excellence, remembered for his iconic voice and engaging presentation style during his long tenure at GBC.

He anchored numerous programs as a journalist and broadcaster, later transitioning to a distinguished career in public relations.

Until his passing, he continued to serve as a respected communications strategist for various organizations in Ghana.

His illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he became a household name in Ghanaian broadcasting.

An astute journalist and broadcaster, Avenorgbo was the anchor for many programs on GBC. He credits himself with pioneering morning shows on GBC’s platforms (radio and TV), which were later replicated by other media houses.

He once indicated that he put the framework for GBC’s morning shows together after working visits to Atlanta, USA, and South Africa.

After his broadcasting career, Avenorgbo has worked as the Director of Communications for the Melcom Group.

Ghanaian netizens mourn the loss of the veteran broadcaster, Godwin Avenorgbo as news of his passing spreads across social media.

Although details surrounding his death remain unknown, tributes from fans and well-wishers flood social media platforms in remembrance of the talented broadcaster.

The outpouring of love and tributes flooding in from fans and colleagues is a testament to the impact he had on so many lives.
