As Ghana prepares for its December elections, the country is once again faced with the challenge of misinformation and fake news.

The recent allegations of militia training in Kwahu, Eastern Region, purportedly for the 2024 general elections, have raised concerns about the potential for violence and unrest.

However, the Ghana Police Service has swiftly investigated and debunked the claims, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fake news in sensitive political periods.

The spread of false information can have far-reaching consequences, including inciting fear, fueling tensions, and undermining trust in institutions.

In the context of elections, fake news can be particularly damaging, as it can influence voter behavior, discredit opponents, and create an atmosphere of mistrust.

“The Ghana Police Service, through its proactive media monitoring, has noted a publication alleging the training of some militiamen at Kwahu in the Eastern Region, for the 2024 general elections”.

“We wish to state that our investigation has found no evidence of such training in the area. We wish to caution the public against the publication and dissemination of fake news”.

The Ghana Police Service indicated that it has launched a thorough investigation to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the false publication.

The perpetrators, the Police Service noted, will be made to face the consequences of their actions in accordance with the law, ensuring that justice is served and the integrity of the electoral process is maintained.

With the increase in disinformation and misinformation, the police must be proactive in addressing these challenges to prevent conflict and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

The Police also assured that it will work with fact-checking organizations to identify and debunk false information and collaborate with social media platforms to remove harmful content.

Police Commit To Peaceful Elections

Furthermore, Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, reaffirmed the police’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and order throughout the electoral process, providing assurance to the public of a secure and stable environment.

Dr. Dampare confirmed that the police will provide robust security measures to safeguard the voter exhibition exercise, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, and ensure a smooth and peaceful process for all participants.

“We want to give the assurance that across the 38,622 polling stations, we are deploying at all the places, and we have a rapid response team to go and also manage any situation with a de-escalation mindset”.

“So that at the end of the day, with the seven to eight days of exercise that we are going to have, it will be successful, it will be peaceful, and it will add something positive to all the positives we have achieved as a country for ourselves and for the African continent”.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, IGP

Dr. Dampare appealed to all stakeholders, particularly political parties, to utilize established channels and follow due process when reporting any issues or concerns that may emerge during the voter exhibition exercise, promoting a harmonious and orderly process.

He emphasized that this approach will enable the law to be applied appropriately in resolving any issues that arise, thereby maintaining peace and preventing the escalation of tensions.

“We don’t want to see any situation where anybody will make an attempt to take the law into his or her own hands. If that happens, we will work within the law to deal with the situation”.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, IGP

As such, he urged the public to rally behind the police and lend their support in promoting a peaceful and secure environment during the exercise, for the benefit of all.

The IGP emphatically stated that the Police will not tolerate any actions or behaviors from individuals or groups that compromise the country’s peace, security, law, and order, and will take decisive action to protect the nation’s stability.
