Not All Secular Music Is Inappropriate

Obaapa Christy

Renowned Gospel artist, Obaapa Christy has added her voice to the ongoing debate about Christians singing secular songs.

According to her, it is not wrong for Christians to sing secular music or for secular artists to perform gospel songs, stating that God loves everyone.

Obaapa Christy explained that not all secular music is inappropriate.

“It is not wrong for Christians to sing secular songs, neither is it wrong for secular artists to sing gospel songs. God loves everyone.

“When it comes to music, we have secular music, we have gospel music and we have profane music… A song like ‘Aseda’ is not that different from a gospel song, just that it doesn’t explicitly mention God.”

Obaapa Christy

She argued that singing Hiplife or other secular genres does not make someone a non-believer or unworthy of heaven, as everyone has a God-given purpose on earth.

“Everyone has a purpose, even troublemakers,” she added.

Obaapa Christy urged people not to judge anyone for their choices, stating, “It is not for you or anyone to judge. Leave what they are doing to God.”

Currently, Kwabena Kwabena’s ‘Fakye Me’ featuring Obaapa Christy, has been described by many as a powerful gospel song.

The Gospel singer stated that she admires secular artists like Samini, Kwaw Kese, Kwabena Kwabena, Daddy Lumba, and Sarkodie amongst others simply because of their dedication and commitment to their work.

“I sometimes take inspiration from them; I enjoy Samini’s music as well as his energetic stage performances,” the ‘No Fears’ hit singer said.

“If you want to improve your music career, you should be selective; you must learn from different artists particularly, their stage performances and the quality they add to the various composition.”

The controversy arose when Rev. Fr. Twumasi’s performance of “Aseda” during a church service was shared online, raising questions about the appropriateness of secular music in religious settings.

Existence of ‘Juju’ In The Creative Arts Industry

Obaapa Christy shared her thoughts on the existence of ‘Juju’ in the creative arts industry.

Obaapa Christy stated that she believes that ‘Juju’ exists but only affects those who engage in it.

“There is a quote in the Bible that a thousand will fall at our right side, and ten thousand at our left, but we will not be harmed. We will only witness with our eyes the punishment of the evil one. And so we reap what we sow; if you sow evil, evil is what you will reap.”

Obaapa Christy

“So yes, I think it (juju) exists, but it locates those who engage in it. If you do good, good will lead you, and if you do evil, evil will follow you,” she said.

According to her, for those who love God, no form of ‘Juju’ or evil will succeed against them.

“You just rely on God, put your mind on God. he will not allow bad things to happen to his children,” she asserted.

Her comments come on the back of widescale discussions over the prevalence of spiritual attacks in the creative arts industry.

Many industry personalities, including actress Portia Asare, Kwaku Manu, and Wendy Shay, among others, have commented on the existence of ‘juju’ in the industry.

In other news, Obaapa Christy urged the public to be cautious in their criticisms regarding marital divorce.

She emphasized that many complex issues can arise in marriages, sometimes necessitating a separation for one’s safety.

The musician advised those who have never been married to refrain from harshly judging divorce cases that become public, as they lack firsthand experience of such situations.

“There are people who profess their love to a woman and yet end up killing her. Many things happen, but if you haven’t experienced it, you speak about it carelessly, while the victim knows how it feels.

“I don’t care whether my ex-husband talks too much; we are no longer together, and it’s been 10 years.”

Obaapa Christy

The gospel artist was previously married to Pastor Love, but they parted ways due to marital issues.
