National ICT Week celebrations

The National Information Technology Agency (NITA), under the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization (MoCD), has launched the National ICT Week celebrations with a focus on the theme “Driving Digital Transformation.”

The event’s official opening was performed by the Chief Director of the MoCD, Mr. Alexander Yaw Arphul, on behalf of the Sector Minister, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (MP).

“In an increasingly connected world, digital inclusion is more than just a goal; it is a necessity. It represents our commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian, regardless of their background or location, can benefit from the opportunities that digital technologies offer.”

Mr. Alexander Yaw Arphul, Chief Director of the MoCD

Mr. Arphul further highlighted that digital inclusion is crucial for bridging divides, eliminating barriers, and creating an equitable digital landscape where everyone can thrive. He pointed out that the celebration of National ICT Week is a significant step towards accelerating national development.

“As policymakers, we have a critical role to play in advancing digital inclusion. Our policies must be comprehensive, addressing the various dimensions of digital inclusion and ensuring that no one is left behind.”

Mr. Alexander Yaw Arphul, Chief Director of the MoCD

Mr. Arphul also took the opportunity to outline the MoCD’s initiatives to promote digital inclusion in Ghana. He mentioned that the ICT For Accelerated Development (ICT4AD) Policy, approved in 2003, has played a pivotal role in shaping the digital landscape of Ghana.

This policy, structured around 14 pillars, has influenced various sectors of the economy to integrate ICT into their operations. However, he noted that with the advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution, there is a need for an updated approach.

“After 21 years of implementation, we have seen that the world has moved towards the 4th Industrial Revolution, which requires that we digitalize many of the services that we offer to the public to enhance efficiency and easy access.

“The ICT4AD policy does not meet the needs of today, so we have developed the Ghana Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, with approval from the Cabinet for implementation.”

Mr. Alexander Yaw Arphul, Chief Director of the MoCD

The ICT4AD policy, Mr. Arphul explained, focused on five key pillars: Universal Access and Connectivity, Digital Skills and Research, Digital Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Digital Government and Data, and Emerging Technologies. The new policy aims to build on these foundations and address the challenges of the current digital era.

Reflections and Future Goals

The Director General of NITA, Mr. Richard Okyere-Fosu, shared his insights on the significance of the National ICT Week. He described the event as more than a celebration, framing it as a reflection on the strides Ghana has made in harnessing ICT to propel the nation forward.

Mr. Arphul highlighted that the initiative aims to foster growth, create employment opportunities, and drive public-private partnerships to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability in government operations.

“ICT Week serves as a cornerstone for our collective efforts toward digital transformation. It allows us to assess our progress, celebrate our successes, and confront the challenges that lie ahead.

“This week acts as a catalyst for innovation, collaboration, and the exchange of knowledge, ensuring that we are all aligned in our mission to make Ghana a leader in the digital world.”

Mr. Alexander Yaw Arphul, Chief Director of the MoCD

Mr. Arphul reiterated the pivotal role of ICT in modern economies, noting that Ghana is no exception. From e-governance initiatives to digital financial services and educational platforms to healthcare innovations, digital transformation is enhancing efficiency and improving the quality of life for all Ghanaians.

As Ghana celebrates National ICT Week, the focus remains firmly on driving digital transformation through inclusive policies, strategic partnerships, and the commitment to leaving no one behind in the digital era.
