Keir Starmer’s Brexit Reset Aims for EU Relationship Revival

Keir Starmer is gearing up to unveil what he describes as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to mend the damage caused by Brexit. The Prime Minister is set to hold a crucial summit with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Wednesday.

The meeting aims to strengthen business and trade ties, enhance defense and security cooperation, and increase joint efforts to tackle illegal migration.

This summit marks the initial phase of what could be a comprehensive recalibration of the UK’s relationship with the European Union.

Starmer’s negotiations with Germany, one of the most powerful and influential EU member states, are expected to pave the way for broader discussions with the EU, covering various critical areas like trade and cross-border collaboration.

Starmer has tasked his team with the formidable challenge of finalizing a UK-Germany treaty within the next six months. This ambitious agreement is anticipated to span a wide range of topics, including science, innovation, and technology, clean energy, trade across the North Sea, supply chain resilience, energy security, and green transition education. It will also address biodiversity and environmental concerns.

Having campaigned on the promise to “make Brexit work,” Starmer’s objective is to renegotiate the flawed deal brokered by his predecessor, Boris Johnson. His plans come amid warnings that hard decisions lie ahead to rectify the “rot” left by the previous Conservative government.

The UK has recently endured a summer of travel disruptions, with British citizens facing delays at EU passport checks as they attempt to go on holiday. The situation is expected to worsen with the introduction of new EU-imposed red tape, further complicating travel for UK citizens.

Before departing for Berlin on Tuesday evening, Starmer delivered a keynote address on the state of the nation, in which he warned of a legacy left by the Conservatives that is even more dire than anticipated.

He reiterated concerns about a £22 billion financial shortfall, cautioning that it would contribute to a “really painful budget in October.” The budget could include increases in capital gains tax and inheritance tax, signaling the possibility of new wealth taxes under a Labour government.

In his speech, Starmer also addressed the summer riots by the far-right, describing them as evidence of Britain’s deteriorating social fabric. He emphasized that it is his government’s responsibility to reverse this decline and rebuild the country.

New UK-Germany Treaty To Fix Brexit Woes

Fixing the Brexit deal has been a top priority for Starmer, though he has remained tight-lipped about the specific changes he intends to pursue. To lead the negotiations with the EU, Starmer has appointed European Affairs Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds.

Prior to the summer, the prime minister hosted the European Police Council at Blenheim Palace. This event came just days after his first international appearance as prime minister at the NATO conference, where he began forging relationships with senior EU leaders.

Starmer has already cultivated a close rapport with Chancellor Scholz, having been his guest in Berlin when England’s men competed in the UEFA European Championship final.

As part of Labour’s broader strategy to reset relations with Europe, Starmer is expected to assure Scholz that he will “fix the broken relationships left behind by the previous government,” which he believes will foster economic growth and bolster control over Britain’s borders.

The UK government has stated that the new UK-Germany treaty will build on the defense agreement currently being negotiated between the two nations.

Over the next six months, Starmer’s team will work to finalize this new partnership, with both sides aiming for completion by early 2025.

The treaty is expected to encompass enhanced collaboration on market access, critical scientific research, clean energy initiatives, trade across the North Sea, and efforts to bolster supply chain resilience. It will also cover energy security, green transition education, biodiversity, and environmental preservation.

Following his visit to Berlin, Starmer is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the Paralympics in Paris on Wednesday night, where he will continue his diplomatic efforts by meeting French business leaders on Thursday morning.
