Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana and flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a bold appeal to the electorate, urging them to vote for him in the upcoming 2024 presidential elections.

Dr. Bawumia asserted that choosing him as President would give Ghanaians a “brand-new tear rubber President,” contrasting himself with his main opponent, former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whom he referred to as a “secondhand President” with nothing new to offer.

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during a stakeholder engagement at Kasoa Odekro’s Palace on Monday, September 2, 2024, as part of his tour of the Awutu Senya East constituency. Addressing the gathering, the Vice President highlighted the differences between him and Mahama, emphasizing that his tenure as Vice President has been marked by significant achievements that set him apart from his opponent.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia portrayed himself as a leader with fresh ideas and a forward-looking vision for Ghana. He argued that his record as Vice President demonstrates his ability to bring about meaningful change and development, unlike Mahama, who he claimed had already had his chance to lead the country and failed to deliver on key promises.

“I am offering something new, something different. I have served diligently as Vice President and have implemented 33 different policies that have positively impacted the lives of Ghanaians.

“My opponent, the former President, cannot point to even one significant achievement from his time as Vice President. This shows that I have passed the test in my current role, and I am ready to lead this nation as your President.”

Dr. Bawumia took the opportunity to compare his accomplishments with those of John Mahama, arguing that his contributions as Vice President surpass those of Mahama, who has served both as Vice President and President.

Dr. Bawumia claimed that Mahama’s time in office was marked by unfulfilled promises and a lack of innovation, while his own tenure has been characterized by tangible progress and development.

Dr. Bawumia’s use of the term “tear rubber,” a colloquial expression in Ghana that refers to something brand new, resonated with the audience. He argued that his presidency would bring new energy, ideas, and leadership to the country, unlike Mahama, who he described as a “home-used secondhand President.”

The Vice President also made a direct appeal to the electorate, urging them to consider his record of achievements when casting their votes. He positioned himself as the best Vice President Ghana has ever had, suggesting that his tenure has been marked by unprecedented progress in various sectors of the economy.

As the 2024 elections draw nearer, the battle between the NPP and NDC is expected to intensify, with both Dr. Bawumia and John Mahama being key contenders.

Dr. Bawumia’s strategy of contrasting his achievements with Mahama’s past record is likely to be a central theme of his campaign, as he seeks to position himself as the candidate of progress and innovation.

With his strong emphasis on digital transformation, economic stability, and social protection, Dr. Bawumia hopes to convince the electorate that he is the right choice to lead Ghana into a brighter future.

However, the final decision will rest with the voters, who will weigh the promises and past performances of both candidates as they head to the polls in 2024.

As the campaign unfolds, Ghanaians will be watching closely to see whether Dr. Bawumia’s message of a “brand-new tear rubber President” resonates with the electorate, or whether Mahama’s experience as a former President will sway the voters in his favor.
