NDC’s Ako Gunn Urges Members to Refocus on Grassroots Engagement

Godwin Ako Gunn, NDC Deputy National Communications Officer

In a rallying cry to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, the party’s Deputy National Communications Officer, has called for a renewed focus on grassroots engagement as the party gears up for the 2024 general elections.

Speaking passionately about the need for unity and hard work within the party, Mr Ako Gunn emphasized the core principles of service and development that should guide political involvement, warning against complacency and elitism.

He urged NDC members to embrace humility and service, irrespective of their positions or titles within the party.

“The National Democratic Congress is a Social Democratic Party with an egalitarian belief of equality. That makes us different from the others. Comrades, the work ahead of us does not need any particular position, title, or office for you to fit in. There are enough assignments for everyone

Challenging Complacency and Entitlement

Mr Ako Gunn also addressed a growing sense of complacency among some party members, particularly those who believe they have outgrown their roles at the branch and constituency levels.

“I have heard a few unfortunate comments like ‘we have done our own in the constituency oo, let the young ones also do their own,'” he said, highlighting a concerning attitude of entitlement that he argued is contrary to the spirit of collective effort and solidarity.

“Sometimes, I feel like throwing up when I see some people disrespecting Party Executives at the Branches and Constituencies just because they are close to some people in high places. Let’s be careful because no tree has ever become a crocodile because it has been in the river for long.”

The Transience of Power and the Need for Unity

Reflecting on his political experiences, Mr Ako Gunn remarked on the fleeting nature of power, noting how even the most influential figures can find themselves sidelined once their tenure or influence wanes.

“This proves that power is indeed transient. Let’s have the humility to work with everybody,” he stated.

His comments are a call to action for those currently holding power to remember their roots and remain grounded in their commitment to the party’s grassroots.

Financial Support and Grassroots Mobilization

Mr Ako Gunn also stressed the importance of financial support for the NDC’s branches and constituencies, urging those with resources to assist in the party’s grassroots efforts.

“Those who are blessed financially shouldn’t neglect their Branches and Constituencies,” he implored.

Drawing from his extensive travels and interactions, Mr Ako Gunn highlighted how even small gestures such as providing a T-shirt, flag, scarf, or fuel can significantly bolster local campaign efforts.

Looking Ahead to 2024

As the NDC prepares for the upcoming 2024 elections, Mr Ako Gunn strongly indicated that victory will be achieved through the collective efforts of all party members, particularly those at the grassroots level.

“This year’s elections will be won by the efforts of our constituencies and Branches,” he asserted.

Mr Ako Gunn’s rallying cry is a call to unity and action, urging all NDC members to put the past behind them and work together towards a common goal of winning the presidency and securing a substantial majority in parliament.

In closing, Mr Ako Gunn expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, urging members to “keep hope alive” and look forward to “better days ahead.”

Expressing optimism over the likelihood of the NDC winning several constituencies in the December polls, Mr Ako Gunn underscored the promising signs of support for the opposition party across the country,

Mr Ako Gunn’s remarks serve as a powerful reminder of the NDC’s enduring commitment to its principles and the importance of grassroots mobilization in the quest for electoral success.
