CPP Flagbearer Outlines Vision for Ghana’s Future

Nana Akosua Kumahkumah Flag bearer of the Convention People's Party (CPP)

The Flag bearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Akosua Kumahkumah, has outlined her vision for the future of Ghana. Madam Kumahkumah highlighted on the state of governance in Ghana, emphasizing the need to return to the fundamental principles that the nation’s independence was built on.

Madam Kumahkumah reflected on the vision of Ghana’s founding leaders, including the principles of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and called for a revolution to revive the core ideals of the country.

Addressing critical issues such as the fight against illegal mining (Galamsey), Kumahkumah articulated her vision for restructuring governance and tackling the systemic problems plaguing Ghana today. Madam Kumahkumah stressed that independence is a right and should not be something one has to fight for. Madam Kumahkumah lamented the current state of Ghana’s democracy, which she believes has lost its way. “We’ve lost our democracy,” she declared, arguing that the very purpose for which Ghana gained independence has been eroded. This, she noted, has left the country in a state of disillusionment, with citizens losing faith in the government’s ability to uphold democratic values.

Madam Kumahkumah reflected on the struggles of Ghana’s early leaders, drawing parallels between their fight for freedom and the challenges the nation faces today.

“Osagyefo knew clearly… that’s why you see our symbol and we say freedom. That was exactly what we needed to do—get our basic freedom first, become at least a sovereign state, and then from that point, do what is right for yourself, your people, and your generation.”

A Cry for Revolution

Madam Kumahkumah expressed her deep sense of responsibility and urgency for change, even describing herself as “accelerated” towards a revolution for the country.

For Kumahkumah, her rise to leadership represents the people’s desire for a shift in governance, one that aligns with the original values of Ghana’s independence.

Galamsey: A National Crisis

One of the most pressing issues Kumahkumah addressed was the Galamsey menace, which she described as “a canker that is eating at the very fiber that makes up this country.” She highlighted the devastating effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s water bodies, agricultural sectors, and overall environmental health. Madam Kumahkumah’s approach to solving the Galamsey crisis focuses on building strong institutions and addressing the root causes of corruption and greed.

“At the core is lack of integrity… at the core is corruption… at the core is no accountability.”

Madam Kumahkumah stated, emphasizing the need to re-establish ethical governance and restore public trust in the system.

Ethics, Equity, and Innovation: The Pillars of Change

Madam Kumahkumah outlined her vision for Ghana’s future governance, built on three key pillars: ethics, equity, and innovation. She believes these pillars are essential for rebuilding the nation and returning ownership of the country to the Ghanaian people.

“The country as we have it today, who is in charge? Everything has melted to a central system that can’t hold anymore.”

Madam Kumahkumah argued that restoring ethics in governance is paramount to addressing the challenges facing the country. This includes resetting the moral compass of both leadership and citizens through traditional African values. Kumahkumah proposed reinstating cultural practices, such as swearing in public officials with water, symbolizing the return to ethical and honest governance. “We will reset the button,” she promised, signaling her commitment to rebuilding Ghana’s institutions.

Madam Kumahkumah’s governance model also emphasizes decentralization, empowering local communities to manage their affairs. Madam Kumahkumah criticized the centralized government system, which she believes has failed to address the needs of ordinary Ghanaians.

“That village that gets the water… that young boy that is working… these are human beings. The governments of the people, by the people, for the people… they go and vote. and wherever they go to vote, under my government, that location will be the government.”

This approach reflects Kumahkumah’s belief in localized governance, where decisions are made by the people most affected by them. She envisions a system where every community has the autonomy to manage its resources and solve its problems, rather than relying on a distant central government.

Moreover, Madam Kumahkumah acknowledged the widespread belief that the country’s laws and institutions are in place but stressed that they are ineffective due to a lack of political will. Madam Kumahkumah argued that, without addressing the root causes of corruption, no number of laws or military intervention can solve the Galamsey crisis or other challenges facing the nation. “Some would argue that we have the laws in place… it is a lack of political will to fight this thing head-on,” she observed, stressing the need for genuine commitment to change. Madam Kumahkumah a call for collective action, urging Ghanaians to join her in rebuilding the nation. She emphasized that the problems facing Ghana cannot be solved by the government alone, but require the active participation of all citizens.

“We must not leave the small unit, that small unit called a village, that small unit where water is passing… governance should start there.”

Madam Kumahkumah’s statement painted a picture of a nation at a crossroads, where the principles that once guided Ghana’s independence have been lost. Her vision for the future is one where governance is ethical, equitable, and innovative, with strong institutions that serve the people rather than the interests of the few. Through decentralization, community empowerment, and a return to traditional values, Kumahkumah aims to restore Ghana to its rightful path and combat the deep-rooted issues of corruption, greed, and mismanagement that have hindered the country’s progress.
