Dr. Justice Srem-Sai

Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, a distinguished lawyer, expressed his deep admiration for the enthusiasm and dedication with which young lawyers are tackling human rights issues in the country.

Dr. Srem-Sai remarked that their passion is truly astounding and offers a glimmer of hope for the future of “our beloved nation“.

He noted that over the past twelve days, since the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse protest began, dozens of young lawyers, operating under the banner of Lawyers for Protest Defence (LPD), have truly risen to the occasion.

Their swift and dedicated involvement, according to Dr. Srem-Sai, has been critical in defending the rights of the protesters and upholding the principles of justice.

“They have been to every single police station and detention facility in the Gt Accra Region, providing not just legal advice and representation to protesters, but also acting as search parties, using every means available to them in search of protesters who could not be found.

“They’ve constituted themselves into delivery men and women, buying and distributing food, toiletries, and other supplies to detainees – with their own monies”.

Dr. Justice Srem-Sai emphasized the pivotal role these young lawyers are playing in the ongoing #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse protest.

He noted that they are tirelessly serving as intermediaries between the families and loved ones of detainees, civil society organizations, activists, and the police authorities.

Their dedication to this work is evident, as they provide constant legal support and coordination around the clock, often without showing any signs of frustration or fatigue.

According to Dr. Srem-Sai, their calm persistence in the face of challenges underscores their deep commitment to justice and the protection of civil rights during such critical times.

“I’m happy to say that there’s at least one lawyer for each of the found 54 protesters currently in detention”. – Dr. Justice Srem-Sai

Accordingly, the astute lawyer expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the young lawyers for their unwavering dedication and encouraged them to continue their efforts.

He urged them to build on this momentum, recognizing the vital role they play in advancing justice and protecting human rights.

Anyidoho Criticizes Protesters and Public Outcry Over Human Rights

Meanwhile, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, sharply criticized the arrested protesters and questioned the public outcry regarding their human rights.

He suggested that the GJA president appears to endorse the unlawful actions of these “hoodlums” by calling for their release on the basis that their rights are being violated.

Anyidoho raised concerns about the rights of innocent individuals who were denied access to medical care during the protests, expressing disbelief at the public’s apparent disregard for these consequences.

He voiced his shock and disappointment at what he sees as the public’s misplaced priorities.

“Those who are advocating that the laws of Ghana should not work vis the Democracy Hub hoodlums should also advocate for the release of ALL prisoners and the closure of ALL prisons so that we live in a lawless country. They should also advocate for the collapse of the Ghana Police”

Samuel Koku Anyidoho

Anyidoho further extended his criticism to former President John Mahama and his running mate, accusing them of openly supporting what he described as the “animalistic rhetoric” coming from some of the demonstrators.

He expressed disappointment that prominent political figures, who should serve as role models, are endorsing such behavior.

Anyidoho lamented that petty, divisive partisan politics has eroded their sense of morality and decency.

He stressed how disheartening it is to witness leaders, who should uphold higher ethical standards, aligning themselves with what he views as destructive and unprincipled actions.

This, he said, reflects a broader decline in the values that should guide public leadership.

Meanwhile, as the arrested protesters remain in detention, the public is deeply divided over the application of the rule of law in this context.

Some citizens advocate for the legal rights of the protesters, emphasizing the need for due process and fair treatment, while others question the legitimacy of the protests and the actions that led to the arrests.
